Habit: Shrub up to 3 m tall.
Habitat: Wild, dry deciduous to moist deciduous forests and also in open forests.
Altitude: 200 to 400 m above msl
Description: Leaves alternate, simple, penni-veined, hairy. Flowers ca. 8 mm long, purple, placed in long racemes. Fruits long, yellow, beaded pods.

I have seen this plant in Bengal too which seems to be a probable option.


Yes … this plant is distributed in most part of India 9from South to North), Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and Africa. This is very common in forest under growth.


Good one … So from your pictures this Desmodium is having a large leaf as compared to many others posted earlier.

Yes u r right this is having very large leaves and thus easy to identify among other Desmodium species.

Herb for ID, Vikarabad, Telangana NAW-JUN18-01 : 6 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (2)
Kindly help identify this small herb found in a mango orchard on the edge of a scrub forest near Vikarabad, photographed in May 2018.
Height of herb about 10 cms. leaves about 1 cm, maybe smaller.

the Pod suggests it as Desmodium
may be Desmodium gangeticum variety


It may not be D.gangeticum for I had doubt about the size given; is the leaf 1-foliate or 3 foliate

Looks like Desmodium velutinum.
