Bangalore outskirts Likely to be Canavalia ensiformis … Dolichos trilobus L. Thank you very much … for sharing this and thans to … This looks similar to my post where … suggested the possibility of Vigna. The stamens in Canavalia are monadelphous as per FoC. So, this seems to be a Dolichos. But D. trilobus L. is glabrous or almost so as per FoC. with white corolla.
The name D. trilobatus L. is Phaseolus trilobus Aiton, having small yellow flowers.
The name Dolichos trilobus is confusing, because there are one D. falcatus Willd. and one D. falcatus auct. non Willd.
I think this is possibly Dolichos tenuicaulis (Baker) Craib. (D. falcatus Willd.iii.1047 in FI) Thanks, …
Range of Dolichos tenuicaulis (Baker) Craib is Himalaya (E. Nepal to Bhutan), Khasia, Burma, Thailand, China (Yunnan) as per FON. Also it is Meghalaya1, Orissa1, Sikkim3, West Bengal1 as per ILDIS
In south India, only Dolichos trilobus L. seems to be there as per Dolichos page.
Also Dolichos falcatus WILLD. is a synonym of Dolichos trilobus L. as per The Plant List & GRIN & ILDIS. Thank you …, perhaps you are correct, it is Dolichos trilobus L. as suggested by …, but flowers should be yellow in long axillary lax racemes as per link in efi page referring the book I think i was wrong suggesting D. tenuicaulis (Baker) Craib (as a probable id). FoC says it is found in the range of 2000-2300 m. and FBI entries are confusing, please check – Moreover, entry in Flora Indica is also confusing, for Roxburgh connected D. falcatus Willd. (having blue-purple flowers) with D. trilobus Lour. the later being a Pueraria species!
Haines noted this in his BoBO. Prain didn’t list it in his book, BP.
In spite of so much confusion it is probably not Canavalia ensiformis, which is a large climber, generally cultivated, having 1.5 to 2 inch wide pods.
So, what it is? FBI says D. falcatus Klein has yellow corolla, FI says blue-purple, FoC says white (of-course China var.)! Attached here relevant entries.
Based on above and the following links I agree with …-
Though initially I thought my species is also same as of …, I think my species may be some other for its so much hairy nature.

It looks like Dolichos trilobus to me too. Thank you …, may I have your view on another post, at efi thread? The main difference seen seems to be the pubescence [strigose] of the Hoogly plant as opposed to the glabrous nature of the Bangalore plant. Does it make it var pubescence? lean Fabaceae Hooghly SK2 28Nov12: Attaching images of a twiner found beside railway-tracks.
Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : twiner with small trifoliolate leaves and small flowers
Date : 4/11/12, 10.47 a.m.
Place : Hooghly This could be a species of Vigna. Thank you … for the ID suggestion. Attaching two more photos, one from the same plant – xx_28nov12_DSCN7996.jpg. This looks like our common vegetable SIM (lablab) as can be seen in the second pic, vegetable_Lablab_purpureus_29nov12_DSCN8204. jpg. A correction, or further clarification, this looks like the vegetable which we call SIM in Bengali, but it is not Lablab (Dolichos lablab L.) for sure. This plant has much smaller leaves and pods. The fruits look much like Lablab purpureus. If it is purely wild, then it could be Dolichos trilobus. Thank you very much …, it is purely wild, I visited this plant twice to check if it could be a Lablab purpureus, but I think not. Compared to L. p. it is a lilliput or pigmy. Soil nutrients won’t be a factor. I think it roughly satisfies all characters described in FBI & FI combined, including peduncle to petiole ratio. Please help me with Telugu names of Dolichos trilobus L. in native script …
Following two names (with variations) are listed at ENVIS – FRLHT for its synonym Dolichos falcatus Willd.
itamungatige, itoomungeetiga
verriulavu, verrivulava
I am not sure about the first; please help.
The second, I could sum up from online Telugu-English dictionary by Charles Philip Brown as:
… you are absolutely correct Thanks very much … I think you may missed this pair of names: itamungatige, itoomungeetiga I hope one of the two makes some sense
I know తీగె tige OR తీగ tiga = climbing plant OR creeper
but was not able get any results for itamunga or itoomungee. Sorry I missed this teega, it is ఇంటి ముంగతీగ; means a vine that grows near the (residential areas) house; both తీగె and తీగ are similar, they are dilect changes; In telugu language we write how we prounounce; prounouciation differs between educated and tribals or village rustics; hence some differences Thank you very very much … for the help with names and native script.
