Please can someone tell me if I am correct in thinking this is TECTONA GRANDIS.

Deffinitely not Tectona.
Leaves in my pics show a very different vein pattern. Back to the drawing board.

What is this young planted tree?

It may be Exbucklandia populnea of Hamamelidaceae.

I would be so thrilled to have got a pic of a tree in Hamamelidaceae.

We grow many named shrubby Hamamelis. I love the tiny spidery flowers on the bare stems in January/
February. The scent on some is wonderful. They really lifts my spirits in the depth of a cold winter.

Yes from me too! The characteristic stipule visible in the first photograph suggest this to be Exbucklandia populnea. Common in E. Himalayan region.

I found very good close ups on WWW of the young leaf buds.

However, my knowledge of foreign trees is not good enough to be sure that this is the only tree in the area to have these.

I am delighted with this chance find.

A friend in Sikkim has just told me the local Nepali name for this tree is Pipli.

I found one reference that says there is large specimen at UC BERKELY… … if you happen to go there may be we get to see the full grown tree…

Picture taken on the 24th of October,08 at Kodaikanal.

These trees were found lining the Kodai lake, one of the most beautiful lakes… as also in other parks. Kindly help in identifying please.

Could it not be Viscum album taking hold of the tree???

… is it the portia tree, Thespesia populnea.
On second thoughts it may not be — am sure … is familiar with it.

It is not look like Viscum. Very sorry I have not seen this plant earlier

Can u plz post a full habit photograph of the same? I’m almost sure about this plant to be as Exbucklandia populnea because of the characteristic stipules. U can find this plant at so many places in NE India.
