A large scandent shrub. Bark dark greenish black, lenticellate with large white lenticels both horizontal and vertical, branches and branchlets subterete or obtusely quadrangular, young parts slightly pubescent, glabrous when mature. Leaves simple, decussate-opposite, elliptic, elliptic-oblong, ovate-oblong, 12-26 × 3-8 cm, base subcordate to obtuse, margin entire, apex acute to acuminate, chartaceous, membranous, foetid or pungent smell when crushed or bruised, glabrous on both surfaces, minutely pubescent on nerves beneath, lateral veins 5-7 on either side of the midrib, impressed above, prominent on midrib beneath, reticulate veinlets, petiole slender, pubescent, canaliculated, about 2-3.8 cm long. Inflorescence terminal paniculate corymbs, composed of 8–12 opposite dichotomously branched cymes, about 10-25 cm long, peduncle, slender, obtusely quadrangular, about 4-9 cm long, bracts leaflike or foliaceous, lanceolate, bractlets subulate, about 3 mm long. Flowers bisexual, numerous, pedicels about 1-3 mm long, Calyx cupular, faintly 5 toothed, 2 lipped, apex obtuse, pubescent, about 2 × 1.5 mm across, Corolla infundibular, light greenish white or grayish yellow, 4 lobes, 2-lipped, upper lip 1-lobed, entire, lower lip 3 lobed, lobes obovate, obtuse, corolla tube narrow, about 2 x 1 mm across, densely pubescent at throat, glabrous outside. Stamens 4, didynamous, exserted, filaments filiform, about 2-3 mm long, slightly exserted, anthers globose, 2-celled, Ovary obovoid, truncate at apex, 1 × 1 mm, glabrous, style slender, 2 mm long, stigma bilobed, divaricate, lobes equal, subulate. Fruit drupaceous, obovoid, glabrous, about 4 x 3 mm across, dark purple black when ripe, fruiting calyx saucer shaped, seeds obovoid.

Premna species flowers are complete, bisexual, i.e., with functional male (androecium) and female (gynoecium), including stamens, carpels and ovary. Pollination is entomophilous i.e., by insects. Flowering/Fruiting: May-November.
Seeds dispersed by anemochory i.e., wind dispersal, zoochory i.e., dispersal by birds or animals.
Susceptible to insect pests.
Deciduous to evergreen forests.
Local Distribution: Meghalaya, Sikkim, West Bengal. Global Distribution: Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.
