In case of Vitex trifolia, the leaflets are sessile. Apart from this, V.trifolia grows naturally along the coast – it is a littoral species.

Lamiaceae & Verbenaceae Week: Lamiaceae, Vitex trifolia from Delhi:
Vitex trifolia, photographed from Vikas Puri in Delhi

The trifoliate nature of the plant is clearly visible in the third photographs. The foliage of 1st and 2nd photographs are similar. However, the third photograph looks like the different one for me.

They are from the same bush. I have seen these plants closely for several months. The plants that are heavily trimmed to make low hedges generally have simple leaves, although some trifoliate leaves may be seen in the lower branches. If an occasional bush is untrimmed for a long time most of the leaves would be trifoliate. A totally untrimmed shrub (almost a scrambler) would have have almost all trifoliate leaves.

great, that means its southern tip of Maharashtra……

I got to know from … in a personal mail some days back about mix-up of Malayalam names in my notes of Vitex trifolia and V. negundo.
She has helped me with names as they must be:
കരുനൊച്ചി karunocchi (or കരിനൊച്ചി karinocchi)  = Vitex negundo
വെണ്‍നൊച്ചി vennocchi = Vitex trifolia
നൊച്ചി nocchi = generic name for most of the species of Vitex
കരു (or കരി) karu (or kari) = black
വെണ്‍ ven = white
Based on above names in Malayalam and their meanings, the names in Tamil would be as following …
கருநொச்சி karunocchi = Vitex negundo
வெண்ணொச்சி vennocchi = Vitex trifolia
Please validate.
This query because the entries in online dictionary seems to be quite contrary:
கருநொச்சி karu-nocci … Vitex trifoliahttp://dsalsrv02.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/philologic/getobject.pl?c.2:1:4287.tamillex
வெண்ணொச்சி vennocci …Vitex negundohttp://dsalsrv02.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/philologic/getobject.pl?c.12:1:3635.tamillex

நொச்சி nocchi = Vitex negundo
கருநொச்சி karunocchi = the purple form of Vitex negundo (often referred as var. purpurascens). [கரு karu = black, denoting the dark purple form of leaves and flowers]

Vitex trifolia : Devbagh Karwar: Vitex trifolia : Devbagh Karwar
Verbenaceae
This shrub was present at many places few meters from sea shore at Devbagh beach.
Leaves 3 foliolate, 5-10cm, petiole 1.5 cm. leaflets sessile elliptic.
Flowers in terminal panicles. Drupes 6-8mm also observed.

Great, the fruits were convincing, not the leaves, wonder why?

That’s correct observation … I had same thoughts initially. I identified it as Vitex immediately on observing the flowers but was hesitant to see the leaves crowded. On careful checking and close observation I found them trifoliate with short petiole.

Three-Leaved Chaste Tree is a large coastal shrub or small tree, less that 5 m in height with the stems covered by soft hairs (tomentose).

The leaves are oppositely arranged along the stems, simple or trifoliate with 3 linear leaflets which range between 1 -12 cm in length. The upper surface of the leaves are green and the lower surface grayish green.
The flowers are born in panicles or clusters up to 18 cm in length. Individual flowers have purple to violet two-lipped corollas that are approximately 5 mm long. The stamen are in two pairs and the ovary is superior, or develops above the corolla.
The fleshy fruits are about 6 mm in diameter and contain 4 small black seeds.

Shrub for ID, Delhi, NAW-DEC20-02 : 7 images.
Kindly identify this shrub a bit taller than 2 metres in height, older leaves pale green, newer leaves darker and glabrous, fruits 2 mm in diameter when crushed smelt like turmeric. I missed taking a proper picture depicting its habit.
Photographed in Sundar Nursery Park, near Humayun’s tomb, New Delhi in December 2020.
