Duabanga grandiflora from Gandhi Tekri in Mumbai : 5 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (11).
Duabanga grandiflora is a rarity in Mumbai and, so far as I know, its occurrence in the city is limited to three individuals in a couple of curiously contrived fragments within the forested habitat of Borivali National Park – two handsome trees near the Gandhi Memorial on Gandhi Tekri, and a six-foot sapling in the Krishnagiri Nisarg Parichay Udyan (inaugurated last month on the 5th of December, 2013).
The flowers bloom well after sunset and a morning visitor invariably runs into a fresh harvest of snowy stamens carpeting the floor. Surviving the night are vacant calyces with a protruding style, and a few hung over, flaccid stamens and petals on the verge of collapse.
Since the flowering happens to coincide with the 66th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today, I’ve also included a characteristic anecdote on his relationship with plants – Our Brethren the Trees – by Madeleine Slade (better known as Miraben) with a postscript by Gandhi. It appeared in Young India in the issue dated 5 December 1929, and the Gujarati version – આપણાં વૃક્ષ ભાઈબહેનો – was published later in Navajivan on the 12th of January, 1930.

All photographs were taken yesterday (29.1.14). Have scanned the last two files from the original back issues of Young India and Navajivan.

Yes! Duabanga grandiflora (DC.) Walp is the accepted name. Family: Lythraceae.

After this time I cannot remember for sure.
But I believe it was a large tree with big leathery leaves and large flowers.

It is the beautiful, interesting young seed pods that I recognise from Duabanga.
But I was not sure that this was the only tree which had these.
Which is why I was seeking confirmation.
This link shows the interesting fruits more clearly than my pics.

Requesting to please ID this tree captured in Lalbagh, Bangalore in November 2013.

Seems a species of Lagerstroemia.

This seems to be Duabanga grandiflora.

Thank you … for ID…
