Photos are beautiful. Sundarban is named after this plant.

Yes, … this plant is called Sundari… in bengali…

Yes … did learn while compiling the names that Sunderbans (largest delta in the world) derives its name from the abundantly growing sundari tree.

Dear friends, the names that are listed bear a link … you may click on the name to reach the name page,
… for instance … •Bengali: সুন্দরী
sundari <https://sites.google.com/site/indiannamesofplants/bengali/s…>…
clicking on the Bengali name will lead to a page dedicated to সুন্দরী sundari
Other than wanting to know WHAT is the name of a plant, WHY the name, naturally follows. Reason behind basing a name is interesting.
Would like to know stories / beliefs / reasoning for every name of the plant … so, please do not hesitate to discuss names of plants.

… recollecting that you had pointed this sometime back in the past too … efi thread
Let me clarify once again that the family name is not going to be put in this Names of Plants in India project … because this database is being manually built – it is not programmatic … any change that occurs due to change in family will be a frustrating exercise to repair the data. Therefore no mention of family … am sure it does not really make the data incomplete.
The crux of the project is names of the plants …. the common names of the plants do not change … the botanical names’ status of the plants are liable to change — those changes too prove difficult for repairing !!

Shrikant ji and Navendu had found this Mangrove tree at “Kille Nivti” in Konkan Malvan region, Sindhudurg coast. This turned out to be great find for them and subsequently a news article also appeared in Times of India.

Flora Picture of the Year 2010-Shrikant Ingalhalikar:
Dungoba Rai is a beautiful sacred groove located in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. This may be the only coastal ‘Devrai’ and perhaps the only one that has rare mangrove plants. Trees seen at the upstream end of the fresh water are the precious ‘Sundari’ mangrove trees or Heritiera littoralis. This is the only record on the western coast of the celebrated trees of the Sunderbans of eastern India. Around 50 full grown trees with heavily buttressed roots can be seen. They are known by the locals as ‘Samudra Kandol’ very aptly (Sterculiaceae) because Sterculia villosa which grows uphill is known as Kandol. Heritieras here have been flowering in July and fruiting in latter part of the year. All the trees in Dungoba sacred forest are protected by the locals. May God Dungoba bless the forest for the ensuing centuries.

We have such place called Devrai in Sindhudurg Dist.. Devrai belived to be ‘residence of God’ therefore protected by locals .. all forest activities are also banned in such area. Also we have many rare and endemic species of plants and animals in Sindhudurg..

Rare species of mangrove tree found along Sindhudurg coast Kalyani Sardesai | TNN Pune:
City-based amateur botanist and photographer Shrikant Ingalhalikar and Narendra Page, a doctorate student of forest ecology from the Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, recently came across the Sundari (Heritiera littoralis), a rare mangrove tree, along the Sindhudurg coast. This is the first such recording of the tree in Maharashtra and probably on the West coast, they said.
The tree is also known as the ‘looking-glass tree’, probably because the leaves are silver-coated. It is found in large numbers in the Sundarbans in Bengal and to a lesser degree at Bhitarkanika at the delta of the Mahanadi river in Orissa.
“This is an important find, and the forest department must be made aware of this rare natural resource,” said Ingalhalikar. “This is the first record in Maharashtra and may be the only record of a living specimen on the west coast. A century ago, a specimen of this tree was reported on the Kali river at Karwar in north Karnataka. There is also an old report from Kerala. In recent times the tree was believed to be extinct on the west coast.”
The duo say they have also found four other species of rare mangrove trees in the adjoining areas of Sindhudurg. “The Sindhudurg habitat also supports Xylocarpus granatum, Cynometra iripa, Dolichandrone spathacea and Rhizophora apiculata.
These species exist in small, scattered populations in Goa and Karnataka as well. This unusual diversity makes the coastal habitat of Sindhudurg ecologically sensitive as it is very much the ‘hot spot’ for rare mangrove species,” Ingalhalikar said.
“Besides protecting the mangrove forests, it is necessary to cultivate such rare species for preservation of biodiversity,” he stressed.
A Sundari tree (Heritiera littoralis)

My best wishes for Shrikant Ingalhalikar ji and Narendra Page ji on behalf of Indiantreepix for all the good work they are doing.

This is fantastic!
Can any pictures of Sundari be shared with indiantreepix?
