This time i myself found one on a railway station (Balarambati, Hooghly). ‘Bengal Plants’ refers it as পরশ / পরশ-পিপল (PARAS / PARAS-PIPAL) in Bengali.

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/04_Thespesia_variable%20leaves.jpg
Thespesia populnea is one of the most widespread and extensively propagated trees in & around Mumbai, both along the coast and inland. One of the key features of this tree, and one that is highlighted in all the descriptions of this species, is its indehiscent fruit. Its congener T. populneoides is known for its dehiscent fruit.
In the last few years, I have often come across dehiscent fruits on many of these trees all over Mumbai & its environs. These dehiscent fruits are borne on short stalks (c. 3 cm in length). In a few instances, I have encountered indehiscent fruits borne on long stalks (c. 10 cm in length).
The Thespesia populations of this region also exhibit considerable variation in the leaf shape, especially the leaf base, which varies from deeply cordate to subtruncate. From what I’ve observed, fruit dehiscence is not confined to trees with a particular leaf shape, it occurs both in the cordate- as well as in the truncate-leaved trees. I have not come across the bronze-coppery foliage characteristic of T. populneoides in any of the trees here.
Have attached a paper on Thespesia populnea and its congener T. populneoides by Francis Raymond Fosberg & Marie-Hélène Sachet [1972]. In light of this paper, a large number of the Thespesia strands in Mumbai appear to intergrade between T. populnea and T. populneoides.
Some photographs of the dehiscent fruits and the variable leaf bases taken in North & in South Mumbai between January and April 2014 are attached herewith.
Would appreciate any comments and observations.

An old post of yours on the Thespesia populnea. The last image has a brilliant red insect on it. Found out that insect happens to be the Cotton Stainerhe of Pyrrhocoridae which are a cosmopolitan family of pentatomomorphan bugs including about 65 genera and over 400 species. The Thespesia populnea is a host plant.

DARWIN’S THEORY — THESPESIA POPULNEA SEEDS:
I have been picking THESPESIA POPULNEA Seeds for a decade now in Chennai. The seeds are enclosed in the Pod which is quite simple in a Tropical Chennai climate. However in Bangalore, the Pods have an extra Water-proof cover.. I am picking these seeds only since 6 months. My analysis is that Bangalore weather is more humid, and the seeds have to be protected once they fall to the ground. To keep the Seeds dry this appears to be a natural mutation. I can send the seeds, pods and as i picked up in both places so that it can be a research material for Botany/ Horticulture/ Forest Research students.

Compare to Chennai I think Bbangalore is less humid.
Considering Chennai is in the cost whereas Bangalore is in the Deccan.
Bangalore become humid only during the rainy season and that is too short.
Would you please share some pictures (if you have) of the pods as well as plants you have seen in both the places.

Are there any cultivars in Thespesia populnea? I have seen two types of plants in Bangalore. The differences include tree size, flower colour and nature of fruits. I am not very sure but.

Thespesia populnea : yellow dye & gossypol:   Sharing some fresh insights into one of the commonest trees in and around Mumbai. On a recent visit to a tribal hamlet in Dahanu, I encountered some natives collecting the fruit of Thespesia populnea. On probing further, one of them slashed a young green fruit and it discharged a copious amount of rich yellow juice that is used as a decorative pigment; in this case, to paint the hooves of their cattle! Later, while discussing this with a senior Warli musician and artist, I learnt that this pigment is used occasionally in minor embellishments.

Further investigation revealed that this substance is gossypol. While The Trees of Mumbai (by Almeida & Chaturvedi, pg. 159) mentions that “the seeds contain a chemical called gossypol”, the yellow exudate from the fruit wall appears to be discounted in customary descriptions of this tree. Here is an interesting account of this facet in a paper on this species by Francis Raymond Fosberg & Marie-Hélène Sachet:
“When a bud or young fruit is cut transversally a copious yellow, gummy fluid exudes from the surfaces. We had not seen this mentioned before, nor were we aware of latex in any Malvaceae. Roxburgh, however, mentioned it in his discussion of Thespesia (as Hibiscus) in the Flora Indica, 1832 (vide infra); a label on a plant collected by Lt. Speke on Europa Island (P) also describes the appearance of a canary-colored juice on cutting a green fruit … Dr. Paul Fryxell (in litt.) tells us that this yellow substance is mostly gossypol. It probably should not be called latex in the strict sense.” – Smithsonian Contributions to Botany, Volume 7, 1972.
Didn’t have a camera on hand but have attached a mobile phone snapshot.

This is a tree available in all coastal Indian belts including coromandel coasts. Bengal. I have patronised propagation of these species by picking the the Seeds fromm the Roadsides. i have sent these seeds recently to Sarada Ashram in ULUNDURPET,TamilNadu. If you have more information worth bringing to the notice of Tree-lovers, please let me know.
In case, you have a place to grow these, I can send you seeds FREE

Excellent post! Often we tend to dismiss the widespread trees with a passing glance, so it is fascinating to learn something so interesting about a common tree. Thanks … for sharing these remarkable observations.

Thanks a lot … for showing an uncommon characteristic of this tree, I never knew about it before. I have some of these Bhendi trees near my house in Mumbai.

I did not know about this feature of the Bhendi tree. Yesterday I made a cut in a small fruit and the yelow liquid
came out … i wiped it with a kerchif and I realize that the colour does not go even after washing!!!

Thanks for the useful information, …
In Tamil Nadu, the yellow sap from young fruits is applied, by rubbing the cut surface of fruit over affected part of the skin, for the treatment of skin diseases.

I came across a document , . ‘Ethnobotany of the Maher Tribe, in Porbandar Dist, Gujarat India, a thesis submitted to the University of Saurashtra for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Botany by Nathabhai K Odedra’ where it mentions the medicinal use of the leaves as
…….”Extract of 3-4 fleshy leaves ground with an equal quantity of cow milk. This mixture is taken on empty stomach early in the morning for seven days, it is effective remedy for jaundice
Interesting i thought. Could be checked with members from that part of the country. I have had the juice of an extremely bitter leaf while in the south for the same malady.

Thespesia species (Ran Bhendi) from Mumbai. Typical monsoon flowers.

I see a mixing up here …

Yes Sir, both the flowers are different but they have similar bhendi like fruits.

I think the 2nd picture is of Thespesia populnea
while Ran Bhendi in Marathi refers to some species of Abelmoschus like Abelmoschus manihot, Abelmoschus ficulneus etc.

Is it Thespesia populnea ?
Location : Chennai outskirts
Date :15.11.2019
Elevation : 23 mts.
Habitat : Forest

Looks different ?

On a second dlook it looks closure to it as there are many variants in this species : Check this link as well.    https://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Thespesia_populnea.htm

Thank you for the reference Sir.
It resembles Thespesia populnea.

I agree with Thespesia populnea, though leaves look smaller and thicker which might be an adaptation to local environmental factors to reduce water loss.

yes Paras piplo in Gujarati. grows in ganges delta too. i pass by one every day

Thanks, …  I also agree with the id.
