Location- Place, Altitude – Kaiga , Uttar Kannada ,Karnataka, 380 mtrs Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- Wild Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- TREE Height/Length-7m The tree in question is neither Diospyros malabarica as the persistent calyx is absent and nor is the tree Bridelia retusa as fruits of Bridelia are shiny berries almost black in colour. However i could be incorrect. Experts please comment .. the picture above may or may not be Bridelia. But the black berries of Bridelia retusa take time to turn black, before that they are of various colours- grey- green, green, yellowish, half green yellow maroon and than turn black. Infact, most of the time I have seen them in unripe form only. You may check my pictures of the same posted last week. I have seen Bridelia berries at all stages and have eaten them too. It could be Knema attenuata, please check it

It was in the last December, I happened to see Knema attenuata was in full bloom in Vythiri, Waynad, Kerala.
Knema attenuata belongs to the family Myristicaceae is a Western Ghat endemic tree species. This is one among the most dominant tree species in the Western Ghats. Distributed mostly in the western side of the Ghats. This shade loving tree species usually grows in the sub-canopy layer of evergreen forests.
The flowers of this plant was a common sight during this time (December -February) whenever I go for field work. This time I was fortunate to look through and capture the small sized male flowers (the plant is dioecious; male and female flowers born on separate individuals) of Knema attenuata with a macro lens.
I like the contrasting colors of androecium (stamens are conjoined here) and perianth.
The tiny male flowers (female flowers are dull. I shall upload pictures later) are really a beauty and treat to the eyes. Beautiful photograph … of Knema attenuata. Sharp and clear picture. Last year i had seen this tree in flowering at North Kanara. Nice picture …, with sharp details. I guess this is pollinated by some beetle?! Would like to see the female flowers too. Beautiful flower .. And interesting information too. Yes the stamens are in an amazing colour. This kind of marroon colour is a feature of basal angiosperms I guess. Please post the female flower also. yes males of Peacock and other cock ( as in early morning Cocka-doodle – doo) and many are more decked out than the female of the species…and look more beautiful… except HUMANS !!!! ha ha…
I hereby include the picture of female flower of the species that I captured from the same location but from a different individual. You mean that the tringular edges have anthers below it? Yes … each triangular edges represents one anther and you can see the pollen grains as you enlarge or zoom in the picture.
I am sharing a photograph of Knema attenuata which i had photographed at North Karnataka during my trek last year. Nice picture, … The androecium looks like a natural clock with its 12 units (anthers) in the exact position of hours in a dial. I also had a guess that the pollinator could be beetles but now, I think it is some moths! As we hardly seen visitors in the day time, we checked for nocturnal visitors and we could see some moths are playing around. I am into collecting more info. I will share the same as I get.

ചോരപ്പൈൻ, here ചോര chora means blood and പ്പൈൻ pine is pine tree. I will correct my notes accordingly.
My suggestion is we use chorappaain instead of chorapine … pine makes sense when we read it as an English word … paain will be better for reading Malayalam പ്പൈൻ in English.

The tree was found on the banks of the river.
Leaves are simple, petiolate, linear, entire and acute.
The flowers are cauliflorous, they are yellow, trimerous, borne as fascicles(?).
