Family: Orchidaceae
Date: 19th March 2015
Place: Chamarajnagar (at the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka Border)
Habit: Herb
Habitat: Deciduous forest

Yes Vanda testaceae. Third flower from the base is going to fruit. I always feel happy to see fruits in in-situ populations.

nice to see the pods as … said and Amazing … how in the world does one tell… which flower will fruit?
could you show us which picture and which flower?
Is it this one by any chance?
first the original above and then one with my added circle on the flower face and tube arrowed labelled A and B resp…on the original above as submitted by … OR AM I OFF BASE?

In the image 6703, on the floral stalk, from bloew if you go up, 1st and 3rd flower has swollen ovary. That is usual sign to understand that this flower has been fertilized. Otherwise flowers will fall off without swelling of ovary and secondly, flower will certainly stay longer if they are not pollinated.

thanks, … but i dont exactly know what it is i am looking for
wild guess : i think i see “protruding structure” … is that the fertilized now swelling ovule?
i know you cant conduct a botany class long distance but i had to know

The part that connects flower to the main stalk.

oh ok
its very subtle but i saw it and discarded the idea… is that subtle
is this process described in detail and with puctures or drawings some place?
I’ll keep looking at all pictures of orchids in nature..

Thank you for confirming, … Several plants of this, too, had fallen down to the ground.

Very interesting pics. I am sure ant is not the pollinator, if yes then it is more interesting. Ok, now let me ask a very simple but interesting question for fun…… WHY DO YOU SEE SO MANY SPIDER WEB AROUND THE FLORAL STALK?

[Fwd: : Flora of Kaiga_Sharing_Vanda testacea 03052016 PK1]] : 1 post by 1 author.
Very simple Sir, ants are not pollinator as per my observation, may be attracted by nector/sugary pollenia or to get the dead insects from the labellum. secondly spider is wiser. It knows where to weave its web to prey on insects/bees which is attracted by shape, colour  and nector in a labellum. Would like to know more from you.

QUERY :: meaning of the epithet testacea:
Meaning of the epithet
testacea (also testaceum, testaceus) is — colour of brick … referred Dave’s Botanary.
Could there be another meaning ?
This query in context of Vanda testacea — not able to know of red colour associated to the species.

Relating to or possessing a testa or hard shell?

Many thanks … for this good possible meaning, perhaps refers to covering of its fruit.
Have a sighting of the fruits: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/5663195939/ … though not sure of it having hard cover.
If this is also a meaning, then it seems more appropriate than the brick colour. Many thanks.

I can’t find any other meaning either. Our friend Chuck says:
“made of brick or tiles; shell covered; brick colored”.
His site can be useful too, here is the URL:

Thank you very much, Mic for leading me to this good site: Dictionary of Botanical Epithets. It will prove very useful.
…. shell covered seems appropriate in context of Vanda testacea.

Orchid plant for identification 060812MK03:

Please help me to identify this Orchid found in a coffee estate in Vaalparai. I have not noticed the flowers of this.
The picture Orchid (7) is taken at a different location with Spathodea campanulata as host tree.
Height: 15-20 cm
Leaf: 15 x 2 cm
Fruit: 5 x 0.4 cm
Date: 14 July 2012
Place: Vaalparai, TN
Locale: Coffee estate
Alt.: 1000 m asl

Most likely Vanda tessellata, but need flowers to confirm.

The plant is like Vanda testacea (Lindl.) Rchb.f. but flower is essential for confirm.

This can be testacea but the fruits are longer and even inflorescence seems to be long or just because pic has been taken from below it seems like that.

I would also go with V. testacea. At Valparai V. testacea is quite common. But we shall confirm once you get the flowers.

Looks like Vanda testacea to me too…

Thank you all. I think the leaves are bigger in V.tessellata than V. testacea. The scape is not more than 12cm here. I have to look the flower for further confirmation.

Ok I take my words back. Plz accept my apologies. Seems I am getting old 😛 This should be Vanda testacea
