Piper umbellatum L. … (family: Piperaceae) Seen this plant hanging down from a big tree. Could be some Parasitic plant?? Date/Time: 19-01-2010 / 04:00PM
Location: Mabhige, North Karnataka Habitat: Wild. Lepisanthes umbellata, a climbing shrub of Papaveraceae. A new plant for me I had no ideae papaveraceae had climbers I see some confusion somewhere. Lepisanthes is a genus of Family Sapindaceae, trees and shrubs.
I see no match for Lepisanthes umbellata in IPNI, GRIN or even Kew Plant list
The only reference I found in the link indicated below, a member of Piperaceae, I think again in error
Extremely sorry for the error. Pls read as Lepianthes umbellata (L.) A mix up in excitiment. Lepianthes umbellata (L.) Raf. is now Pothomorphe umbellata (L.) Miq. and it is Piperaceae and not Papaveraceae. Hope now this is on dot. Yes … Now I know where the error lies in the link I had forwarded. Just a small doubt, “What we see in the photographs i posted are fruits, leaves or something else?” – They are flowers, or rather inflorescences similar to Pepper. – I think we can see a few leaves in the last photograph. They should look like these:
http://www.plantes-botanique.org/espece_Lepianthes_umbellate Thanks … I don’t think i would have ever come closer to this ID myself. I was initially thinking it to be some parasitic climber.

The Malayalam and English name are correct, but some more names to be added. They are പന്നിപെരുവലം panniperuvalm and പീച്ചമ്പാൻ peechampan. Two plants were conserved here having high medicinal value, and pictures also at EFI archive under this title.
The sad thing is not available these names except അട്ടനാറി attanaari (means common millipede smelling or strange aromatic smell while leaves crushed) while searching in English Wikipedia. Please google the link and check screenshot.
https://ml.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0BF Many many thanks, dear …, for pointing to the additional names on the Malayalam Wikipedia page, and for the appreciation.
I have now added them to my blog page. Your close-up photo of the pepper spike is wonderful. Malayalam names added …
