I hope the plant is indeed Penstemon as you have said. This particular garden variety of Penstemon is called ” Vanilla Plum”. Agree with … It is Garden Penstemon, Penstemon gloxinioides.
I could not find any Penstemon gloxinioides in either Catalogue of Life or POWO.
These cultivated plants are really confusing.
