Perennial herbs, about 10-50 cm tall. Stems slender, erect or decumbent, slightly grooved, pubescent, many raising many from a woody rootstock. Leaves simple, alternate, obovate-oblong, oblanceolate to elliptic, about 5-45 x 2-14 mm across, base tapered, margin entire, apex retuse, acute to obtuse with mucronate tip, glabrous above glaucous and sparsely pubescent on the veins beneath, petiole subsessile or about 1-1.5 mm long, stipules absent. Inflorescence in solitary, axillary, extra axillary or leaf opposed, bifurcate lax racemes, 5-10 flowered, about 10-35 mm long. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, yellow, pedicels about 2-3 mm long, bracts ovate-lanceolate, apex acute, keeled, persistent, sepals 5, unequal, in 2 series, usually outer 3 small, ovate-lanceolate, margins hyaline, ciliate, apex acute to acuminate, about 1-3 x 1-1.7 mm across, inner 2 larger petaloid winged sepals, obliquely obovate, apex obtuse, mucronate, persistent, about 4-8 x 1.5-4.5 mm across, enlarged in fruit, 5-7 veined, veinlets anastomosing, persistent, petals 3, yellow, base glabrous, margins undulate, about 4 mm long, tubercled crest, lateral ones orbicular, adnate basally to the staminal sheath tube, lower one keeled, base clawed, divided with fimbriate forked appendages. Stamens 8, monadelphous, filaments united basally, variously free or united above, into a somewhat tubular split staminal sheath, free portion about 2 mm long, anthers oblong, basifixed, dehiscing from the terminal pore. Ovary laterally compressed, bilocular, glabrous, about 1.5 mm long, style terminal, narrow near the base widened and hooked near the apex, stigma lateral, entire or lobed. Fruit capsule, compressed or flattened, suborbicular, base oblique, apex notched, about 3-5 x 4-6.5 mm across, margined with wings, dehiscing loculicidal, usually enclosed in persistent sepals or winged sepals. Seeds globose-obovoid, about 3 mm across, sparsely hairy, caruncle tri-lobed hood shaped, creamish white.
