Wild Jasmine? : 9 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (2).

Flower for Id pl.
Is this Wild Jasmine ? We found it everywhere in Manas National Park,Guwahati.
Date- 03.03.2014
Habitat –Wild

This is not a Jasmine plant, it is Psilanthes sp of Rubiaceae

Although the flowers had no fragrance, the local people told me the name as Wild Jasmine. I haven’t seen any of Psilanthes sp.

… this is Psilanthes sp. earlier known as Coffea sp.. It is appeared to be nearer to Psilanthes bridsonii?

Thanks … But can’t find much information on web too about the sp. you have mentioned. Still waiting for confirmation. These flowers were very common over there.

I think Santhosh ji means to say is Psilanthus bridsoniae Sivar., Biju & P. Mathew = Coffea neobridsoniae A. P. Davis
As per GRIN & The Plant List most of the species are placed in Coffea.
Details of some Coffea species in India are available at efi page on Coffea.

To me it seems to be Coffea bengalensis. I saw it in the wild at Tezpur (Assam). It is found in North Bengal also. It is known as AKHAJI/ DEWAMALI/ KOTHNAPHUL in Assamese (Ref. EDIBLE WILD PLANTS OF THE HIMALAYAS, By R L Badhwar and Dr R R Fernandez). I am attaching an image of the plant taken at Cooch Behar,

But generally Coffea genus always have flowers in bunches (like the one in C.robusta or C.arabica which I recently saw in Coorg). Some of the images of Coffea bengalensis on the web are showing these flowers in bunches. But the images posted by me and you are showing single flowers.

A reply from another common thread: “Psilanthus bengalensis?”

efi page on Coffea benghalensis (Syn. (≡) Psilanthus benghalensis (B. Heyne ex Schult.) J.-F. Leroy);

This (Attached here with) picture I have taken recently from the same area and same species but the flower is different on a single branch 2 flower with 5 petals (looking accuminate) and one with 7 petals (looking Lanciolate). Is there any option of male and female flower ?
I hope all of your comments regarding this Pasilanthus sp.

As per FBI corolla lobes of C. beng(not h)alensis Roxb. are obovate-oblong, as you can see in – efi thread Don’t know explanation of extra petals, though can be found in various plants occasionally.
