– Dodonaea viscosaVirali in Tamil .  There is one virali malai (hillock) in Tamil Nadu. The plant is of high medicinal value. Mostly found in many scrub jungles and waste lands in Karnataka / Tamil Nadu.

I have seen branches of this shrub tightly woven together to make strong and beautiful fences in some tribal hamlets in Kerala.

Dodonaea viscosa is found in Pachmarhi and Balaghat (M.P.) also. Meanwhile it has been planted as hedge plant in police lines Seoni (M.P.)

Hop Bush (Dodonaea viscosa) from NBNP Garden, Anaikatti, Locally abundant spcies in woody scrub jungle habitat.
Fruiting season May to June.

Dodonaea viscosa
Had heard about the tree but never seen it. Thanks for sharing.
A small tree or a large shrub with those characteristic capsule -red brown on maturing; with two to four wings.
… has posted some nice pictures of these fruits on Wikimedia commons.
Family : Sapindaceae
Though from Sapindaceae it seems to have simple alternate leaves which secret some resin.
Similar winged fruits are observed in Holoptela integrifolia and Pterocarpus marsupium also.
Any other plant with similar fruits????

Dodonaea viscosa, also called Aliyar in my area (Haryana). the plant is normally used as hedge as the plant is not eaten by grazing animals, forms a thick hedge and being unarmed is not dangerous as a hedge in gardens….

Note ; Could you please identify the plant attached with this mail? is it Hymenodictyon exclsum?

I think there is a confusion here. Hymenodictyon is a tree.
This looks like Glinus of family Molluginaceae or may be Oldenlandia of Rubiaceae.

Agree with …, the posted picture is not Hymenodictyon. It may be Dodonaea viscosa.

Yes for me too this looks like Dodonaea viscosa

Sharing pictures of Dodonaea viscosa, commonly known as Hopbush from Oman.
These pictures were taken in May,2013 at Jebel Akhdar, which is at a height of around 3000 metres in the Al Hajar Mountains.
This place is also famous for Rose water and the world famous Pomegranates.

The locals use this flower in their salads, don’t they?

Frankly, I have no idea if these are used in Salads.
The ones seen in the pictures are mostly winged seeds, only the first picture has flowers.

The plant of Dodonaea is available in India are mostly D. angustifolia…. in most of flora it is identified as D. viscosa…. It will be better to consult Flora of Kerala and Leenhouts, P.W. 1983. Notes on Extra-Australian species of Dodonaea. Blumea 28 (2): 271-289.

I will try to validate this id from an expert on Oman flora.

Thanks, …, for your valuable comments.
Pl. see all the references with details in this regard as given at page Dodonaea.
Your views seems to be in agreement with GRIN (updated in 2006).
But I shall like to go with the Tropicos which has been updated with refrences in 2013 until & unless there is something more to it.
Even Flora of India uploaded by you goes with Dodonaea viscosa in this regard.

Thanks for your information. I have mentioned the litterateurs where there is descriptions of the plants to distinguish as two species of Dodonaea. I follow the link as they treated D. angustifolia L.f. as synonym of D. viscosa Jacq.

Dodonaea viscosa subsp. angustifolia or Dodonaea viscosa subsp. viscosa:

There has been a lot of confusion as to whether our plants posted in efloraofindia at Dodonaea viscosa are Dodonaea viscosa  subsp. angustifolia or Dodonaea viscosa subsp. viscosa.
Pl. see confusion in various sources at Dodonaea‎. However, most of the sources generally point towards  Dodonaea viscosa  subsp. viscosa
In Celastraceae & Sapindaceae Fortnight : Sapindaceae : Dodonaea viscosa : Oman : 090114 : AK-3, one of our member has stated that The plant of Dodonaea is available in India are mostly D. angustifolia…. in most of flora it is identified as D. viscosa…. It will be better to consult Flora of Kerala and Leenhouts, P.W. 1983. Notes on Extra-Australian species of Dodonaea. Blumea 28 (2): 271-289.
As per Pl@ntUse:
The genus Dodonaea comprises about 60 species, which are almost all restricted to Australia, suggesting Australia is an evolutionary centre of dispersal. In Australia, Dodonaea viscosais described as having seven subspecies, which are largely geographically distinct. In tropical Africa, 2 varieties of Dodonaea viscosa are distinguished: the coastal var. viscosa, which has usually bisexual, whitish flowers, a strongly 2-lobed scar of fallen sepals beneath the fruit and not or only slightly compressed seeds, and the mainly inland var. angustifolia (L.f.) Benth., which has usually shorter and narrower leaves, usually unisexual, greenish-yellow flowers, a more or less annular scar of fallen sepals beneath the fruit and more compressed seeds. These differences are sometimes considered sufficient to distinguish 2 separate species, the latter variety given specific rank (as Dodonaea angustifolia L.f.).
However, I got a difference from a very authentic source Austraian Native Plants Society, where all 7 subsp. are given.
Dodonaea viscosa is a very variable species with several subspecies recognized. In habit it ranges from a small shrub to a small tree up to 8 metres high. Features of the various subspecies found in Australia are:
  • subsp.viscosa – compact, spreading shrub 1 – 3 metres high. The leaves are wedge-shaped (cuneate) to narrow-obovate (egg-shaped), 1.5 – 3 cm long with a short, blunt point or occasionally 2 – 3 toothed. This subspecies is generally found in mallee scrub to open forests in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Pl. see details at Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants
  • subsp.burmanniana – small tree 2 – 6 metres high with narrower and longer leaves than subsp.viscosa (6.5 – 15 cm long). This subspecies is found from north eastern New South Wales to north-east Queensland.
  • subsp.angustifolia – compact shrub to 3 metres high with much narrower leaves than subsp.burmanniana and of similar length. This subspecies is found from south east Queensland to Victoria. Pl. see Plant Net and POWO
  • Going through our posts, Dodonaea viscosa, our posts are correctly placed as Dodonaea viscosa subsp. viscosa.

Mathew flora of Tamilnadu carnatic also discussed about this. Thanks … for you clear analysis.

Yes …, your interpretation is correct. My submissions from Delhi as well as from California are subsp. viscosa.

Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’ from California-GS02042023-1: 6 high res. images.
Dodonaea viscosa is differentiated from D. angustifolia (now treated as D. viscosa f. angustifolia (POWO, WFO) or D. viscosa subsp. angustifolia; leaves elliptic lanceolate, with acute to acuminate apex, flowers mostly unisexual, scar of sepals on fruit annular or slightly lobed, fruit wings with reddish tinge)) in obovate-oblanceolate leaves, subacute to notched at tip, distinctly tapered towards base, flowers mostly bisexual, scar of sepals strongly bilobed and fruit wings straw coloured or brown. The form with purple colour leaves is often listed as subsp. atropurpurea (with no authentic publication) or cultivar ‘Atropurpurea’ but widely recognised as cultivar ‘Purpurea’. Sharing the same from Fremont California here.
