. As per efi thread : In both D. stramonium and D. metel the plants are glabrous, hairy in D. inoxia
The deciding difference between D. metel and D. stramonium is that mature fruit of D. metel is drooping, covered with short blunt tubercles barely exceeding 3 mm; in D. stramonium mature fruit is erect covered with long spines up to 5 mm long.
In addition the following may help. Plants of D. metel are generally taller less branched and erect often reaching 1.5 m and tend to have purplish stem, in D. stramonium plants are shorter, more branched and spreading, stems not purplish.
The leaves of D. stramonium are generally parted, whereas they are not parted in D. metel
.
Luckily you can distinguish them from vegetative plants and flowers also.
1. Plants glabrescent; calyx 5-angled; corolla less than 12 cm long; leaves sinnuate-dentate, anthers less than 5 mm long (capsule erect, 4-valved, with stout up to 5 mm long prickles) … D. stramonium
1a. Plants glabrescent or hairy; calyx cylindrical; corolla more than 12 cm long; leaves entire or sinuate but not
dentate, anthers longer than 1 cm (capsule deflexed, irregularly dehiscent)… 2
2. Plants gladular-pubescent, not purple; calyx 8-10 cm long; corolla 15-18 cm long, anthers 10-17 mm long (capsules deflexed, covered with slender prickles, pubescent, irregularly dehiscent) …………………. D. inoxia
2a. Plants glabrescent, often purple; calyx 4-9 cm long; corolla 14-20 cm long; anthers 10-12 mm long (capsule deflexed, with short broad-based short prickles, irregularly dehiscent) …………… D. metel

I believe this too is Datura metel L. D. fastuosa is a synonym. If you look at stem, the stem of D. metel is dark purple or blackish, so called kala-dhotra in marathi and D. fastuosa’s stem is greenish called just Dhotra in Marathi. Flora of Haryana: Datura Stramonium from Near to Munak Karnal:
Datura Stramonium from Near to Munak Karnal pls validate Size of the prickles on fruit leads me to think that it may be Datura metel. I think u r right Sir I guess Datura fastuosa L. and its different from D. metel L. Since a very long time D. fastuosa L. considered as synonym of D. metel L. In both D. stramonium and D. metel the plants are glabrous, hairy in D. inoxia
The deciding difference between D. metel and D. stramonium is that mature fruit of D. metel is drooping, covered with short blunt tubercles barely exceeding 3 mm; in D. stramonium mature fruit is erect covered with long spines up to 5 mm long.

Datura flower and fruit from Dombivli:
Sending photo of Datura flower and fruits seen in a marsh land at Dombivli. The fruits are offered to Lord Shiva. Place : Dombivli Yes … D metel yes common worldwide… even if garden are well tended and “OVERSTAFFED” ….
about 30 and then again 20 or 25 years ago found it in well tended garden edge with rocks as mulch … in waiting area of Pirates of Carribean Ride and then again in similar rock chips mulched flower bed of Swiss family Robinson Ride… remember it well since I took the pictures..many people started taking pics, and then next day (we were obsessed with the rides and had Seven day passes/tickets) they were gone and park rangers standing around told us “the plots were de- weeded last nite… ” even in snow bound NY I find in well tended plots of parking lots of fivestar designer apparel stores… go figure? how do these seeds find their way to such places is guess work at best… I guessed it must come in with the mulch… In India I find it in road sides, temple grounds, rubbish heaps with stones rocks that are not cleared away for years… do not know how seeds got there, bird poop? Any other ideas??? Anybody? Datura metel L. from CCSHAU Farms Hisar

One of common weed in the waste land and around the Air Port area of Coimbatore. Complete set of pictures Sir. I wl post the double corolla of Datura metel later on. Hooghly Today : Datura metel Linnaeus (purple): Here it is … efi thread Thank you very much for the link, but there was another one, showing the double corolla. Yes by … efi thread I am very sorry for taking much of your time, it was … – efi thread. Thanks … and …: now I got to see all four submissions in the same sitting, by you , … and … wonderful pics
never seen so many seed pods as in … pics… We see at least on entry in the annual flower show at the Hort. Its medicinal though , most herbal garden grow them around the world… would love some seeds I have seen this DHUTURA only in front-yard of a few people, never in the wild. Certainly will take a note in my next find. Hooghly Today : Datura metel Linnaeus: “Bengal Plants” describes three Datura species :-
Capsule opening irregularly near apex, usually pendent –
flowers more or less purple ……………. fastuosa
flowers white or cream-coloured ………. fastuosa var. alba
Capsule deeply 4-valved almost to the base, erect; flowers purple stramonium var. tatula
I think this species is Datura fastuosa var. alba = Datura metel Linnaeus. so does it mean one needs to wait till fruits develop and finally burst open to get an exact classification in case of DATURA? Luckily you can distinguish them from vegetative plants and flowers also.

Presenting dissected flower of Datura metel with apparent 4 whorls. Cream colored variety, this was a fallen flower, I didn’t pluck fresh one.
In Surat city. Cultivated.
From left, calyx, first, outermost, smallest whorl, second whorl and innermost whorl, the longest one.
Innermost whorl looks like it is two, but in reality it is one, long span arranged spirally.
Arranged like a paper cone. And outer surface of second and innermost have outgrowths of same corolla tissue, that appendage held in between my fingers.
Inner surface.
Stamens on one side of this span of inner corolla.
This is second time I did this dissection. Outermost whorl is free, and easily gets removed, second and innermost I found stuck to each other, densely in narrower part of tube
patchy in flared part, making dissection delicate work.
There are more observation, I shall share soon. (Currently obsessed with this Genus). . From Agra, U.P.
