An impressive, large, upright, sparsely branching Pandanus to 16 m tall with robust trunks supported by heavy stilt roots, and stiff, long, straplike leaves in fan-like crowns. The large, cylindrical infructescence is made up of densely arranged, wedge-shaped fruits, also called keys or phalanges, that have an immensely hard, woody and fibrous body in which several narrow, edible seeds are embedded (and difficult to extract). Each key has a fleshy base that contains an aromatic pulp that, after cooking, is a staple food in some of its native lands. Pandanus leram is distributed in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and in coastal southern Sumatra and western Java, Indonesia, where it grows in swampy areas. In cultivation it does best in tropical climates.
