Thunbergia fragrans of Acanthaceae family.

I am sorry … but yesterday I had posted a creeper which was Id as T fragrans but its leaves are totally different than this creeper. Kindly refer to it. I cannot attach its pics as 2 threads would mix up

I think both are same species.

Leaves do not show much variation Plese compare picture no. 260920111981.jpg and 230920111877.jpg

(previous post use the link below) with 270920112017.jpg (this post).

Look at the picture 230920111877.jpg you can see that there different types of leaves in the same stem.

Size and shape may vary according to the availability of light/shade and water for some plants. But if you compare the flowers they are basically the similar.

Link for previous post for comparison.

Ok but I am not fully convinced about the leaves My previous post the leaves are much longer and pale green whereas todays post they are roundish broager and dark green. But I take your word as I am totally ignorant about plants

Yes

My observations:

This plant is observed at many places on way to Panchgani Mahabaleshwar and also enroute Kaas in this season but is not there on actual plateau.

It is also grown in many bungalows in Pune as ornamental.

The flowers at these altitudes are somewhat larger than those found here in city.

Thunbergia fragrans Roxb.

I agree with …

yes. jungle thunbergia or officially Thunbergia fragrans Roxb.

we have a page

though I have only seen them in highly cosseted glass houses in the western countries and not in our botanical gardens on the eastern gangetic planes nor in the “Jungles”: more like overgrown neglected mango orchards of old family owned jamindaris.

while I was pondering these weird data in my mind, I was surfing absentmindedly for just a few botanical drawings of this beautiful flower

and I found this picture and its parent page , a hortus from a nursery and hotsouse gardens in AUSTRALIA of all places, is really from Curtis’s botanical journal page 58.

why is it worth mentioning? it is because….. he writer of that hortus, says its not fragrant, but also tells us that Roxburgh had said its fragrant.

and surmises that perhaps the heat of a tropical forest is needed to bring out the fragrance//scent of the flower.

MY QUESTION TO ALL OF OUR MEMBERS, INCLUDING …, did you notice a scent near this vine or the flower?

I wonder if it should sprout out in a few months after monsoon and heat? thanks. this is asking a bit much, but I will appreciate it ..

thanks … for that one more picture of the bud.

I feel I have not noticed any fragrance in wild flowers I have seen. May be it is very mild or not during the day time.

Thanks once again … for the additional information and I must confess that I didn’t notice any fragrance from these flowers. Again Sirsi being a hill station from Karnataka the climate may not be very hot throughout the year. So perhaps the question of fragrant flowers even in summer is ruled out.

Just deviating a bit, I had seen a climber in Wayanad last winter and looking at those flowers thought that these should be Thunbergia fragrans. I don’t know id of the flower yet but posting it in this thread just to remove the confusion.

No. Look different. Pl. check comparative images at Thunbergia

Latest image looks like a Thunbergia, but not T. fragrans ……throat is wide .

Seems to be Thunbergia grandiflora ‘Alba’.

Leaves would have helped.

No !

It is not Thunbergia fragrance. I have T.fragrance in my home garden. Though the species name is fragrance it does not have any fragrance. Posting the pictures in a separate mail.

– Had thought of that, but T.fragrans looked slightly different to me.

– According to Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’ Vol 4A , Thunbergia laevis is a synonym of Thunbergia fragrans.

– I think this is Thunbergia laevis

– According to the KEW Plant List which has updated all plant names with accepted names and synonyms, T. laevis Nees is to be treated as T. fragrans var. laevis (Nees) C. B. Clarke ex Hook.f. as was done in Flora of British India.

This (T. fragrans var. laevis) differs from T. fragrans var. fragrans in having flowers two in each leaf axil (you can see that in first photograph, one perhaps dried up and one fresh), pedicel much thickened above in fruit, flowers without fragrans, tube greenish and capsule puberulous.

– Dr. Almeida has mentioned T.fragrans var. laevis as one of the synonyms and that’s fine with me – T.fragrans var. laevis it is.

I wonder why would a physician-botanist of a substantial knowledge and caliber make such a mistake? or was it a mistake or the species has lost the ability to produce the necessary oils? we will perhaps never know.

Excerpts from FoI:

There has been lot of confusion on why the species name is fragrans. Dr. Roxburgh, who gave the name to this flower, says in his book, Plants of the Coast of Coromandel:
“the plant possesses a peculiar and agreeable fragrance, and the beauty of its flowers, although not fragrant, entitle it to a place in the flower-garden”
So, the plant possesses a fragrance, but not the flowers

then. try to smell the leaves, crush some and smell….

There is no fragrant smell even after crushing leaves.

Thunbergia laevis & Thunbergia fragrans and its varieties : 5 posts by 3 authors.

We have been mostly considering our posts as Thunbergia fragrans Roxb. so far, based on references herein.

However, Catalogue of Life gives following with distribution in India:

Thunbergia laevis Wall. ex Nees var. laevis (India (E- N- & peninsular India), Sri Lanka, Mauritius (I), La Runion (I), Rodrigues (I), Sierra Leone (I))

Thunbergia laevis var. parviflora (Trimen) L. H. Cramer (Sri Lanka)

Thunbergia laevis var. vestita (Kees) L. H. Cramer (Sri Lanka)

Thunbergia fragrans subsp. fragrans ()

Thunbergia fragrans var. hispida Gamble (India (Andhra Pradesh))

Thunbergia fragrans var. vestita Nees (India (S-India))

I tried to find out the differences between these and found one source at A Revised Handbook to the Flora of Ceylon -, Volume 12 By M. D. Dassanayake (1998)

Keys are as below:

Leaves with a pair of basal lobes on either side, flowers usually solitary in leaf axils- Thunbergia fragrans

Leaves with a single basal lobes on either side or entire, flowers 2-4 in leaf axils- Thunbergia laevis

Thunbergia laevis var. laevis – stem strigulose or glabrescent on angles. Flowers 2-3 in leaf axils. Corola limb 10-11 mm across lateral lobes.

Thunbergia laevis var. vestita – stem and leaves distinctly scabrid, hispid or hirsute. Flowers often solitary. Capsule tomentose.

Thunbergia laevis var. laevis – stem and leaves glabrous or sparsely puberulous. Leaves 2.2-5.6 * 1.5-3.3 cm, generally with one basal lobe on either side. Flowers 1-3 in leaf axils; pedicels slender, to 2 cm long; corola less than 2.5 cm across lateral lobes.

Right now I am not sure weather to follow them or not.

Distribution of Thunbergia fragrans subsp. fragrans is as below:

Myanmar [Burma] (Mandalay, Yangon), Bangladesh, China (Guizhou, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan), Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines (throughout), Sulawesi, Sumatra, Moluccas, Lesser Sunda Isl., Sumatra, Java, India (throughout), Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan (I), Singapore (I), Society Isl. (I) (Tahiti (I), Raiatea (I), Huahine (I), Maupiti (I)), Tonga (I) (Vava’u (I)), Austral Isl. (I) (Tubuai (I)), Niue (I), Fiji (I), New Caledonia (I), Hawaii (I) (Kauai (I), Oahu (I), Maui (I), Hawaii Isl. (I), Molokai (I), Lanai (I)), Rotuma Isl. (I) (St. Croix (I), St. John (I), St. Thomas (I), Tortola (I)), Colombia (I) (Antioquia (I), Bolvar (I), Boyac (I), Cauca (I), Choc (I), Cundinamarca (I), Nario (I), Quindo (I), San Andrs (I), Providencia y Santa Catalina (I), Santander (I), Valle (I)), Bolivia (I), Honduras (I)

I checked all our observations in efi site.

I think keys above are not proper and there is no clear cut demarcation between the two species as pointed out by keys above.

Lobes are quite variable with a single post showing one, one and a half lobes. Some are showing more than two lobes and I think it depends on the age of the leaf also.

Immature leaves are showing more lobes compared to mature leaves.

I think flora by Dr. Almeida gives Thunbergia fragrans var. laevis as a syn. of Thunbergia fragrans as per thread: Please identify this climber – 080311NS-8

Different sources available online, show both the species with contradicting descriptions, as below:

An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India By K. M. Matthew (1995)

Flora of Davanagere District, Karnataka, India By B. K. Manjunatha (2004)

Gardening in India By George Marshall Woodrow, G Marshall (1999)

In view, I feel let us have only one species as Thunbergia fragrans.

That would be a good decision.

I too with …

A common garden plant, a climber, in my place. I have many in my garden. Though it is named fragrance (sps.) it has no fragrance – “irony of fate” !!!

Plant one and you get many.

Yes, now I remember. I had seen this before and had wondered about it’s name ‘fragrans’ and not having any 🙂

Yes. Contrary to its species name it has no fragrans. Common name white-lady. But why the flowers are not fully opened. But there is slight variation in leaves compared to the pictures on NET. In fact I have this plant in my garden. Comes up on its own. In Tamil Nadu the plant is known as indrapushpam & used in Sidda medicine.

… has some doubts about leaf shape. Your opinion please

I think it matches quite well as per images at Thunbergia fragrans and there is no other closer species to it.

ID is correct. Though the species epithet is fragrans. It has no fragrance. It is a common garden plant. I have this in my garden. Self sowing seeds and if you plant one you get plenty of them in your garden in a few months time especially during monsoon.
