Wild Grass for ID : MNP,Mumbai : 121012 : AK-1:

Wild grass seen at Maharashtra Nature Park, Mumbai on 19/9/2010.

Plant was around 5-6 feet in height.

Some grain?

I think its Sorghum halepense

Kindly post photograph of whole plant also. The leaves seems to be broad. However, we have to see the lower leaves too. Also post photo of the inflorescence when it is completely out of the sheath. We have to check whether the branches are verticillate or not. Also see whether the root system is rhizomatous, stoloniferous, etc. or whether it is found in isolated culms or growing gregariously. The broad leaf makes me think it is different from S.halepense. Also see whether the sheath nodes are hairy or not, if possible take a photo of the node also. A close up macro of a spikelet pair would be desirable. For this, you can break a branch of the inflorescence, spread out the spikelets with your hand and then take a photo so that pedicelled and sessile spikelets can be distinguished.

Will try to follow your instructions when I visit the place again.

Thanks for the keen interest shown in my picture.

On searching through my pictures, I found one more picture of the same.

I have also noted all the points that you have asked me to cover during my next visit. Although I am not a trained Botanist, will try to take more pictures.

Might have to wait till the next monsoon season when you find all these wild plants growing.

Hope this picture helps, don’t know how I missed it earlier.

It is Sorghum halepense, as suggested by … As it is rhizomatous (evident by the gregarious growth of the plant as seen in the backgroud of the new photo. If it was not rhizomatous, then it would have been a single clump, instead of spreading all over. The linear nature of the leaf is also evident from the new photos.

And … : when do you think it came to Indiahow wide spread is it?

i found a short but very interesting history of its introduction to USA:

Its called JOHNSON GRASS BECAUSE A MR JOHNSON INTRODUCED IT TO USA IN 1840….

This link is for a thoughtfully written and researched essay on Johnson grass.

https://www.fs.fed.us/graminoid/sorhal/all.html

I quote from the page

GENERAL DISTRIBUTION:

is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and Africa, and possibly to Asia Minor.

Worldwide, its range as a weed extends from 55° N to 45° S in latitude [96,128].

It was widely introduced in North America, Europe, Africa, and southwestern Asia [184], and was also introduced in Brazil, Argentina [155], and northern Australia [78].

In North America it occurs in southern Ontario south through all the contiguous United Statesexcept Maine [72,109,206] to the Rio Grande Delta region of Tamaulipas and the Cape region of Baja California Sur in Mexico [204]. Johnson grass also occurs in Hawaii and the Caribbean [109].

In the United States, Johnson grass was introduced in South Carolina from Turkey around 1830.

William Johnson, whom the plant is named after, established Johnson grass

along the Alabama River in the 1840s as a forage species, and Johnson grass

spread rapidly across the South [14,149,170,182]. Johnson grass is now

widely escaped from cultivation in much of the United States.

It is most invasive in the Southeast, although it is widespread in central California and New Mexico [122,128,206].

Johnson grass is not persistent in the Pacific Northwest, upper northern Great Plains,

extreme northern portions of the Great Lake states, the Northeast [70,110,132,194],

or in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah [111,200,201]. Plants database provides a state distributional map of Johnson grass.”

end quote

For references listed above , you have to go to page in the link below…. https://www.fs.fed.us/graminoid/sorhal/all.html “

it also mentions that its a good forage grass. too much of it may cause nitrogen toxicity, though.

several other websites list it as a weed:
