I had earlier uploaded an enquiry to identify a herb which i photographed in Rajasthan, which had been identified as Evolvulus alsinoides also.

In this case, given that it has been identified as the same species, may it be inferred that when the photograph was taken the petals of the flower seem to be folding over, possibly to conserve moisture?

Attachments (3)

I never knew the leaves were supposedly hirsuite

some mix up I think with the earlier diagnosis

Though I have not seen this species yet the leaves are densely appressed hairy or silky underneath as per Haines in “Botany of Bihar and Orissa”. Bengal Plants and FBI also support that. And also leaves are very variable in shape.

I would like to know whether ‘Vishnukrant’ is a shrub more than 5′ tall with flowers of size about 1″ . This herb was about 6″ tall and the flower size was around 5 mm.

You are right. This is E.alsinoides a prostrate herb of 10- 15 cm total length. The other climber you are talking about is an ornamental climber Jacquemontia earlier discussed during the Convolvulaceae week. If the size of the flower is not mentioned one is often fooled by the ID

The Evolvulus grown in hanging basket is an ornamental species E.glomeratus. It looks very similar! Evolvulus alsinoides is wild and one of the shanku pushpis’ used in Aayurveda in South.

Both are seen nearby my house. One in wild and another in a garden !

i know. thats why i was surprised that some one in Hugli district (WB) was able to grow it (because its very rainy and humid here). so i paid a lot of money to buy it but after a season in the balcony i did not get any seeds.

where as in Saurashtra around Dwarka etc it self seeded and grew in abundance.

Have you photographed both? to show the differentiation in your neighbourhood.

I will photograph and send them

Flower size…

Smaller than thumb-nail= E. alsinoides.

More or less about size of two thumb-nails = E. glomeratus.

Thanks … These flowers were just about a centimetre across.

I think the long pedicel is good characteristic of E. alsinoides; I am not sure of E. glomeratus pedicel length. Any way the E. glomeratus flower is relatively quite large.

my hanging basket flowers were small about 1 to less than 2 cms

I am sending the photographs of E.glomeratus grown on a neighbor house compound wall. The area where the E.alsinoides was present was cleared by the Corporation (cleaning drive).. Nevertheless, I will spot somewhere else and post you the photographs.

Thank you, … I also noticed besides being larger flower, the stem is hairy unlike the A. alsinoides
