This was taken during the inception of GENE POOL Arboretum project at Nadugani, Nilgiris.

One query. The posted plant is a tree.

I can see some red structures on the trunk.

Can you elaborate something more on this?

I have not understood anything out of this.

The red structures are cauliflory. Detailed pictures are here.

I first saw this tree in January this year and was informed that it is an element of pure and untouched forests. We were told to come back and visit in the first week of March to catch it flowering. But when I visited the forest two days back, unfortunately, as the forest guard put it- the flowering of the entire forest seemed to have been ‘postponed’ because of the erratic rainfall in December in the region and we were only able to encounter the initial stages of budding of a lot of trees including this. Flowering of these trees is expected to take place in the next couple of weeks. I will keep this thread updated if another visit this month to the area is possible and I happen to find it flowering/fruiting.

Keep up your good photography.

Perhaps I will request you in near future to donate me a few photographs of Phyllanthaceae for our forthcoming book for which I will give due acknowledgement.

Thank you sir. Would be delighted to provide you with my photographs.

cauliflory always makes a tree look weird, are we so hard wired to seeing only distally growing flowers and fruits ???

wow, very nice to see the flowering.

Very beautiful and detailed pics, thanks for showing me this beauty..

Superb finding … Matter of envy !! Beautiful pictures!
