Kindly confirm id.

what I have learnt here is

plumeria are best ided from the leaves… not from the flowers

flowers are to put in category of plumeria… thats all

further classification seems to be base don leaves and stem shape and bark etc habit…

yes as … says Plumerias are IDd from leaf apices. Here the apex is acuminate hence this is P. rubra. Here rubra is not alluring to colour and plants with yellow, white and red flowers fall in this sp. The petals are broad and overlapping. The other tree that has obtuse leaf apex is Plumeria alba. This has larger flowers with narrow segments which are usually white. Horticulturals varieties may be several.

Thanks for the information in identifying Plumeria.

I am usually confused between P. alba & P. rubra.

leaves, stem, bark, knubbyness of the trunk etc are all different googling will get you the answers

WHAT IS IN A NAME ( FRANGIPANI ) : Attachments (1). 5 posts by 3 authors.

While going through D V Cowen’s Flowering Trees and Shrubs of India, I came across an interesting piece of information on the common name of Plumeria rubra. This plant is known as FRANGIPANI. This is what Mrs Cowen says about the name,

“Frangipani is undoubtedly the commonest name for all these trees, being associated with the very distinctive perfume. Four centuries before the discovery of the Western Hemisphere and of the trees growing therean Italian nobleman, by combining a number of volatile oils, produced a heady perfume which became, and remained a favourite with the noble ladies of Europe. This easily recognisable scent was at once recalled by the early settlers in the Caribbean when they found trees with the same fragrance. So they called them FRANGIPANI, the name of the Italian nobleman.”

I just vaguely remember someone telling me the the meaning of “Frangipani” as “frozen milk” ( may be indicating the latex). Can anyone throw the light ?

—–There is a second explanation of the name (FRANGIPANI ). The French settlers, finding that a wounded tree produced a flow of milky sap called it FRANGIPANIER which means” coagulated milk ”

Thanx … So the “Frangipani” is a french word !

Yes it is P. rubra. Only yesterday I corrected P. alba on Flowers of India which was actually P. obtusa.

In P. alba leaves are much narrower and more importantly without marginal band of connected veins.

Plumeria Pods : Lalbagh,Bangalore : 29JUN16 : AK-50 : 12 posts by 6 authors.

Plumeria Seed Pods were observed in Lalbagh on 28th March, 2016.

This is the first time I have seen pods on a Plumeria.

pods on a Plumeria. I thought it is folicales…. ?

Nice, i wish i could see its follicles too.. because here in Lahore Pakistan, i never saw its fruiting, only flowers present.. i read somewhere that Plumeria rarely produce fruiting during cultivation in non native range.

The species is, if i am not wrong, Plumeria rubra var. bicolor?

Thanks for the Species id.

Whether pods or follicles, I leave it to the experts to define…being a non botanist myself.

yes. India, it seems there are not many plumeria trees that develop pods i.e. have the apparatus to make fruits? i have seem many in Hawaii and some in SE pacific islands and Australia, but none in this lower gangetic plains. Love to see this. was this the only tree of plumeria with pods? ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF OTHER MEMBERS HERE HAVE SEEN THEM? in their parts of the country or the world.

There is some description though not picture… on the net

of a single long dangling fruit in a plumeria. I quote:

“Plumeria Fruit Description

The plumeria tree blooms in the summer and features waxy, showy flowers consisting of five petals in a funnel shape. When the flowers begin to wither, they are replaced by long, slender fruit. A nonedible seedpod, the plumeria fruit reaches lengths of between 6 to 12 inches and features a dry, brittle covering. The brown seedpods do not attract any wildlife. The fruit isn’t showy and won’t create a litter issue in your yard.” from this following URL:

http://homeguides.sfgate.com/plumeria-fruit-56040.html

===

What i have seen: the seeds inside are papery on one end light airy fly off in the air type seeds that disperse as soon as the wind blows.

where as as i googled images for Plumeria seed pods i get this: tonnes of pictures of the follicles. In this picture the lower two are from a claifornia blog the lady has shown one pod dangling for a whole year!!! May be that’s what we have in Lalbagh?? I dont think Plumerias are of two classes, one with pods and second with follicles.

please tell us either way and give papers citations etc.
