Salvia coccinea : Please Confirm ID : Srinagar : 210113 : AK-4:

I just went through the post where you have explained the difference between the two Red Salvias.

Please confirm the id of Salvia seen in Srinagar during visit in Sept,2011.

It is Salvia coccinea as per my own database. A common ornamental herb in Western Himalaya, even more common than S.spendens. However, the final verdict will come from …!

Yes it is Salvia coccinea, common during rainy seasons in subtropical to warm temperate belt of Himalaya.

Yes Salvia coccinea

Beautiful Salvia in Storm drain — Garden var. or species ? : 6 posts by 4 authors. 3 images.

These Salvias are growing wild in a storm drain, in Bangalore.

In addition to the 2 stamens seen, there are two more short ones with undeveloped anthers (staminodes?)

Are they a known species or a garden cultivar escaped ? May be S.coccinea.

Last I spotted this plant, also wild, was near the same region almost 6 years back

More likely Salvia greggii

Many thanks for your reply.

Based on the long exserted stamens and style, I had thought S.coccinea.

The leaves and flowers also seem to match other descs. of coccinea as in Queensland AU Weeds

These plants are rather slender and herbaceous.

I don’t find a description of S.greggi, but the images online show flowers with stamens just exserted or included.

Description of S. greggii can be found at – http://www.botanicus.org/page/431601 and illustration in the previous page http://www.botanicus.org/page/431600 of the same Curtis’s volume.

Dave’s Garden has a photograph http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/6808/.

Though I fail to see hairy stem and bracts in the attached photographs I also think it might be S. coccinea cultivar for its leaves in the third photograph (DSC01302-B). The leaf in DSC01176-B seems to be of a different plant. A cultivar named as “summer jewel pink” looks similar.

Last but not the least is that I do not know any of the species being discussed here.

Yes, … is quit right that the leaves in 1176-B are from the nearby plant, and may be confusing.

I am attaching another image which shows the stem and leaves of the same plant. It has simple crenate edge leaves with a cordate base and acuminate apex. blade about 25mm and petiole 15mm.

Thanks for all the replies. So most likely it is a garden cultivar.
