This is Tectaria sps.

This is Tectaria coadunata. Could people please say where from when sending photos? – give the State. Tamhini Ghat will simply not be known to the vast bulk of people (like unlocatable herbarium specimens which just say “Flora of …” and instead of giving the State, they give the name of some obscure nature-reserve or Wild-life Sanctuary, which will not be on any map!).

The photographs are of Tectaria coadunata.

Tectaria coadunata having lot of variations, hence there are many biotypes which having sub-dimorphic fronds, variable shape and size of lamina hence many species synonymised under Tectaria coadunata (Tectaria macrodonta) or wrongly identified as Tectaria cicutaria from India.

Tectaria coadunata – veins anastomosing all over. Why the sori seem to want to be so towards the margin, I’m not sure. Weren’t there any plants with sori more spread out?

Thank you … I did check the 5 plants in the immediate area for mature sori in the older parts of the plants and the distribution of sori was a constant.

This fern was seen next to a waterfall in the Tamhini ghat near Pune, MH in Aug 2019.

Is it possible to ID.

Compare with Tactaria sp.

I guess you are right … Tectaria sp.

Thanks … There is a posting of T. coadunata from Tamhini ghat (!) on efi

Tectaria, looks like T. multicaudata, but for all Tectaria need to see the stipe with scales and a close-up of the venation.

Or T. coadunata – need veins.

Thanks … Attached are cropped pics. Would this help?

Ah yes, it does help – as we can now see the veins clearly, sorry I didn’t think to do that myself. Being a bit slow on the laptop there! I think the venation is like T. coadunata, as far as I know, but Dr. S.Y. Dong in Guangzhou, China, would be the best person to ask. E-mail me and I’ll send you his e-mail address

Yes, but the authorities for T. coadunata are (J.Sm.) C.Chr. – Riazada & Chowdhury merely created an isonym due to lack of familiarity with the subject and the ICBN, and also had the wrong basionym as Aspidium coadunatum Wall. ex Hook. & Grev, was a later homonym of Kaulfuss. But John Smith legitimised it as Sagenia coadunata in 1842.

Haines was NOT the basionym either, merely combined a further isonym of Aspidium cicutarium var. coadunatum (J.Sm.) Bonap.

If you’d like to see the correct details see Annotated Checklist of Indian Pteridopjhytes 1: 365-367 (2016) – you can get it from Bishen Singh Mahendra Pal Singh, Dehra Dun.
