Guazuma ulmifolia Lam.

Common names: bastard-cedar, West Indian-elm

In India often named Rudrasam in Tamil, Rudraksham in Mal., Rudrakshi in Kan., and often confused with real Rudraksh

in Rajasthan and Maharashtra it is known as Bhadraksh.

Rudraksh is Elaeocarpus angustifolius, advertised so commonly on TV

Badraksh is Guazuma ulmifolia, the poor substitute.

Commonly grown in Delhi in Parks and roadsides.

For ID- 181111 NS1:

This tree I photographed at Jaipur Zoological park on 7.11.11.

Plz Id.

This could be Guazuma ulmifolia (Family: Sterculiaceae)?

Yes Guazuma ulmifolia

So Is this tree too produces ” rudraksha ‘ ?? I thought ” Elaeocarpus ganitrus ” is only rudraksha tree.

… these seeds are supposed to be only about a mm or two…

THE REAL rudraksha can be a few mm to more than 1 CM and sometimes 2- 3 cms in diameter… both sink in water THOUGH …

BUT THE SURFACE IS knobby OR LIKE SMALL SHORT PILLARS IN THE Guazuma ulmifolia …

SOMETIMES THEY RUN CLOSE TO EACH OTHER… BUT SR.. JUST PILLARS…AND IN GUJARATI it HAS A VERY APT NAME … khoto rudraksha…ખોટો રુદ્રાક્ષ ie FALSE RUDRAKSHA

WHERE AS THE SURFACE PROTUSIONS OF THE real RUDRAKSHA BEADS (OF Elaeocarpus ganitrus) ARE BEST DESCRIBED AS GYRI AND SULCI LIKE IN HUMAN (OR ANY MAMMALIAN BRAIN CORTICAL SURFACE)… ie THEY RUN FOR WHILE, CAN BE TRACED ALONG… BIG DIFFERENCE…..

Then poochi maram / rudraksha (kattu) maram in Tamil. The tree is supposed to withstand high pollution levels and also filters dust and soot, but not very attractive. Grows naturally in Chennai ( wild).

Yes Guazuma ulmifolia.

Earlier in Sterculiaceae.

Called as “Bhadraksha” It is pseudo Rudraksha as it resembles one.

Dear friends,

The first picture is cropped version of latter. Not sure if these two pics help in recognizing the fruit of seemingly scandent shrub.

The fruit could be about an inch wide.

Broussonetia papyrifera– if I am not mistaken. Paper Mulberry. Lovely pic

Many thanks … for suggesting the ID; but I think the fruit and leaves of posted plant differ from that of Broussonetia papyrifera.

They remind me of Guazuma ulmifolia that I had seen at Rani Bagh in Mumbai, but I do not recollect whether the posted plant is a climber OR a mix of small trees.

Let us wait for comments.

I too think it could be Guazuma ulmifolia.

Leaves of Paper Mulberry are quite different.

I also think that it is Guazuma ulmifolia.

Thank you very very much … for your thought.

I am convinced it must be Guazuma ulmifolia.

Only the star shape at the top of the fruit is looking a bit different from the close ups I have clicked of the same at Lalbagh.

I can post a close up of my fruit if the need be.

…, you may please post photo of fruit here just for sake of comparison. It will also help in validation of the ID.
