this plant may actually be more interesting than what it appears to be the topic discussion was brought up by …

… wrote this note on Indian Flora

First look towards L.vestita. but by observations of stem grooved with brown hairs, leaves with serrate margin with more teeth, inflor. must be terminal solitary, calyx tube bent on upper side, mouth not cillia, teeth erect, corolla upper lip yellowish brown…so P Sanojkumar from Calicut Univ.

The above remarks appears to me very funny. What exactly he mean by this remarks is not clear. I have merged L. vestita with L. ciliata after a thorough study of more than 7 years with fresh collections of more than 30 accession from Western Ghats and all the herbarium specimens in India as well as the original specimens (not photos) in Kew and Cambridge etc. (went and checked types).

L. vestita is merged under ciliata. and kept as a variety because of some differences on leaves. There are several varieties for this and if need we can create many varieties as each accessions of this species is different in Western Ghats. But it is a complex just like many species complexes in Lamiaceae.

L. sebaldiana is totally different and it can be identified just from its bracts with is more or less foliaceoius. (the illustrations in my paper do good). The inflorescence architecture is different. and anybody looks at it may easily catch up.

L. montana is different.

The specimen you had sent to me, (I got the picture as and when it was uploaded in e-flora and I am keeping one of such herbarium with me and its photo is attached) It shown some differences and I may soon workout this and inform you. In fact I asked for this specimen and details to the author of this photograph, but did not receive any reply). I waited for this to visit the place to know more about this specimen which I couldn’t and also to do molelcular sequencing of this plant to compare with varient forms of L. montana I got from Tirumala (AP), different places in Karnataka and so on. (I have samples with me). Otherwise I could have completed its identity. But I hope I can do it. A thorough study is required to solve such complexes. It is dfifferent from L. sebaldiana, L. vestita (not even in the infrageneric sections of this two species). I have seen all Indian species of Leucas in fresh and herbarium to say so.

See the attachment.
