ID Confirmation Requested_17052011_DSSN1:

On Jan 2, 2011 I posted a pic of a tree , seeng ID- the Title was ‘For Identification_02012011_DS_SN’

I got sme responses, one from .. – suggesting Paras Pepal or Thespesia populnea. Since at that time no flowers were there, I thought I will keep watch for the flower.

Now the tree flowers – the pic of the same tree is attached. Please confirm the Id.

Another suggestion was Dombeya natalensis from …

Hibiscus tiliaceus

i think thespesia populanae belong to family malvaceae small tree

Should not be confused with thespesia populnea. Although it has similar leaves, but the flowers are totally different, solitary axillary, with only 3 epicalyx , calyx cupular bell-like with almost truncate limb.

Here the flowers are borne on a peduncle, epicalyx segments are longer and 7-10 in number, and calyx not cupular. It is Hibiscus tiliaceus.

For Identification_02012011_DS_SN3:

The tree looks beautiful with dense foliage – shot in Howrah garden today.

Dombeya natalensis i suppose….

Is it flowering tree? I have seen similar tree in Kerala called “Poduni” in Malayalam.

here i rectify my mistake the plant which i had earlier assumed to be Dombeya netalensis is actually Hibiscus tiliaceus. this time i am sure..

Talipariti tiliaceum, (L.) Fryxell <=> Sea Hibiscus Tree – Bangalore – RA:

Sea Hibiscus is an evergreen small, spreading tree to 25 ft high and nearly as wide.

The alternate leaves have long petioles and are heart shaped with pointed tips. They are leathery, whitish and pubescent beneath, and 4-8 in long.

The blossoms of Sea Hibiscus are typical Hibiscus flowers: funnel shaped with five petals and a prominent central column which bears the stamens and the pistil. They are bright yellow with a deep red centre upon opening. Over the course of the day, the flowers deepen to orange and finally red before they fall.

The branches of the tree often curve over time and the wood has been used for seacraft construction, firewood, wood carving and many other uses. The inner bark of the tree has been used by Hawaiian Polynesians to make rope. This tree has been widely used as a bonsai in many Asian countries, particularly in Taiwan.

Yes … Very good photographs

I find another big confusion created by The PLant List (I find it more often now as I compare more and more names).

GRIN considers Hibiscus tiliaceus as accepted name (updated on 14 May 2012), and related plant H. tiliaceus subsp. hastatus as Hibiscus hastatus

The Plant List recognises Hibiscus tiliaceus L. as accepted name but considers H. hastatus L.f. as synonym of Talipariti tiliaceum (L.) Fryxell

With such glaring mistakes, I wonder if they have any specialists on their panel.

I have used only GRIN names in almost all cases except when it is not available, used plant list name.

I think I missed in this case. Thanks for pointing it out.
