Asystasia gangetica?: From reading the Floras I came to this identification, although some previous posts of this plant had white flowers.

The plant is about 1m tall, straggling amongst bushes and weeds by the side of the road. Photographed in Neral area on 10.10. 2012

Stems quadrangular, leaves in pairs, glabrous w few hairs beneath.

Flowers 3 – 4cm across.

Flower 3 cm. Bracts very minute. Pod 2.5 cm nodular.

I think this is Asystasia gangetica. Pl. validate.

I had posted the same plant in october this year on this site and it was validated by … Please search to find my pics.

I searched your wonderful pictures of Asystasia gangetica.

According BSI Mah flora. Flower colour is used as one of the character to differentiate the species. I do not fully agree to it. Because it mentions the flower colour violet pink for A.chelonoides whereas flower colour is said to be white or yellow in the two sp. A.dalzelliana and A. gangetica.

I had recently re posted one of my earlier posts with yellowish white flowers which is also IDed as A. gangetica.

I think ….The important character is the cordate base of the leaves which is unique in A.gangetica. This plant is occasionally found as garden escape and seen by roadside.

Yes, this is true.

Another clue is found in Fl of Mah by Dr Almeida who gives a fairly wide distribution for A. gangetica and says that A. chelonoides is only found in cultivation.

Names of Plants in India :: Kannada name of Asystasia gangetica : 9 posts by 3 authors.

Dear friends, please help me with the name maithaala kaddi in Kannada script.

I think it could be this: ಮೈತಾಲ ಕಡ್ಡಿ. Please validate; and will be very glad to know meaning of maithaala.

Reference:

You can also add “Maitta balli” ಮೈತ್ತ ಬಳ್ಳಿ too, another common name of it.

Thanks very much … for this help.

Any meaning of maitta ? It seems to be used in both Kannada as well as Tulu.

Any meaning of ಮೈತ್ತ that you know ?

I tried my best to find the meaning of Mythala kaddi in many of the wikipedias and dictionaries (Tulu, Kannada as well as English). Inspite of my best efforts I could not get any meaning for the same. Please excuse me.

While compiling names for Hygrophila ringens, I found this name ಮೈತಳ meitala in Tulu-English Dictionary (1886) by Rev. A. Männer

The entry in dictionary says the plant (Ruellia ringens) is used in medicine and purifying salt.

Perhaps, Asystasia gangetica has similar properties.

Thus the name maithala kaddi will be ಮೈತಳ ಕಡ್ಡಿ … ಕಡ್ಡಿ kaddi = small stick, slender rod.

I also checked the net. Your interpretation is correct. Transliteration is also correct.

… must we wonder ?

The Latin name of this plant Aystasia gangetica suggests that the plant is to be found along the river Ganges or in the Gangetic plains … stretching along many regions of India … yet there seems to be no name known in Hindi or Bengali !!

– BTW, Wikipedia says COROMANDEL as one of the common names for this plant which is missing from your list. I imagine why they call it so?

– Coromandel is an English name given to many places … interestingly, most of them along the sea … am sure you know, we have Coromandel coast in the south east side of our peninsula.

At Wikipedia, in the context [Chinese Violet, Coromandel[2] or Creeping Foxglove[3] ] it must be an adjective … thus it would mean either Coromandel Foxglove OR Creeping Foxglove.

It also very well suits one of the synonym – Asystasia coromandeliana… meaning Coromandel Asystasia

I missed on Coromandel Foxglove !! … many thanks, will put it in my notes.
