Hello “Yesterday” – in Chennai.: This is my introduction to the first sapling of Yesterday-Today-Tomrrow,

Brunsfelsia pauciflora, which has not only survived but borne its first bloom in our garden in Chennai..

I hope to see the blue and white versions on the “today” and “tomorrow” of its flowering.

Two plants from Kottayam and one from Coorg have bitten the dust, which is why I was thrilled and astounded to meet “Yesterday” today, ie. 25th March.

Mine is still a baby compared to the glorious sight and scent of the trees at Cumili, Kerala, and Mercara, Coorg, but I hope to make it thrive here in Chennai.

Thanks for the id. I had labelled it as Brunfelsia pauciflora in my folder.

So I decided to post my picture for validation.

Well this is why its always time saving if one can take appropriate pictures at the first go..

of the whole plant, its habitat, height, stem, leaves , branching pattern and flowers: en face, sideways and sepals etc … any special feature.

It can be said here that the picture maker may think its such a unique coloration of the flowers that ID will be a snap… but as we time and time again … botanical specimen will lead one a merry dance, making it difficult to id it…

I appreciate your thoughts and advise. Thank you. Sorry for posting only one pic.

wow, r. a good nursery man,

now that he knows you would not hurt his favorites, may be he will allow you more leeway.

I am having difficulty in choosing between B. grandiflora and B. pauciflora.

The defining character is calyx only 12 mm long and flowers more than 5 in a cluster in B. grandiflora and flowers 1 or more and calyx 25-40 mm long in B. calycina.

At least your second photograph (blue flower) could belong to B. pauciflora.

Thank you very much … for validating the ID.

If one of the flowers (the 2nd photo showing blue flower) seems to be B. pauciflora – the 3rd and 4th also would be same – belonging to same plant The blue colour fades to white as flower loses its glory.

Only the first one is from different plant, though the flower size I remember was same as that of blue; perhaps a different cultivar of same species.

Let me put a cropped version of last photo to show some hint of calyx; but I do not remember its size.

Key differences in Brunfelsia grandiflora and B. pauciflora:

Brunfelsia grandiflora

Leaves usually 16-31 cm long, scattered, with 5-9 lateral nerves, less than 8 cm wide

Inflorescence lax, often short-branched, flowers 5-many, showy, scentless, violet fading to white with age, with rounded, white ring at mouth,

Corolla tube 2-5 times as long as calyx,

Corolla tube 15-40 mm long,

Corolla lobes spreading at anthesis

Brunfelsia pauciflora

Leaves usually 2-15 cm long, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, with 5-11 lateral nerves, membranaceous to subcoriaceous

Flowers 1-many per inflorescence; terminal, sessile or subsessile, with 1-11 flowers,

Pedicel 11-25 mm long, showy, deep, reddish purple fading to pale lavender or white with age, with white spot at mouth sometimes edged with violet.

Calyx glabrous or with sparse glandular hairs,

Corolla tube 1-11/2 times as long as calyx,

Corolla tube 25-40 mm long,

Thank you very much … for providing the characters of both the species.

Posted plant agrees with most characters of B. pauciflora …

The leaves were less than 15 cm; they were not large leaves.

Flowers were mostly single per inflorescence.

I am convinced the posted plant is B. pauciflora.

Brunfelsia magnifica Hort. ex Gentil

Evergreen shrub with showy purple flowers that last 4-5 days and fade to lilac to white. Photographed from Summerwinds Nursery, Sunnyvale, California, 6-8-2014.

Taxonomic status of this species is interesting

TLP considers it unresolved

POWO treats it unplaced

WFO considers it synonym of Brunfelsia L. (synonym of genus directly)

It may not be a separate species, but just a cultivar like Brunfelsia pauciflora ‘Magnifica’ or simply Brunfelsia ‘Magnifica’

To me appears close to images at Brunfelsia pauciflora

Sam Growers mention Synonyms: ‘Magnifica’ under Brunfelsia pauciflora ‘Macrantha’.

Gardening in South Africa mentions Brunfelsia ‘Magnifica’

Mgonline mentions both as the same.

Brunfelsia pauciflora ‘Magnifica’ should be fine

Nice to see the fruit.. I had never seen it here..!!
