Garden Flower for ID_02012011_DS_SN4: This one from a garden, small bush like plant.

– This is Brunfelsia americana….commonly known as Lady of the Night.

I was wondering why it is called Lady of the night and searching the internet, I got this interesting feature:

The amazing feature, and the reason for its name, is that after sundown Lady of the Night flowers become wildly fragrant. Within seconds after sundown, the aroma bursts forth from zero to full power. There is absolutely no smell nor hint of aroma in daylight hours. The intoxicating scent goes all night long then stops exactly at sunrise

12 02 11-PR – For ID: Please help me id this shrub with flowers that start out white and then become a mustard yellow, (probably the next day.) I have also clicked the buds. The plant was in a private garden in Chennai.

– Yes, there is another plant of this genus (Brunfelsia calycina) that is called Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow, but this one is B. americana. It can be called only Y&T because it changes colour only from white to yellow. This is from Solanaceae, you can see alternate leaves.

– I think it is a Brunsfelsia americana, though I saw it in the daytime and so did not notice any fragrance. Also there were no fruit to be seen.

I have seen the Brunsfelsia pauciflora on a clove plantation in Cumini, Kerala and on a coffee estate in Coorg. What a wonderful perfume the shrub/ small tree gave out!
