Sida acuta has two forms, 1) narrow leaved and 2) broad-leaved. This pictures may be of the broad-leaved form of S. acuta. Not sure but.

I can see three linear epicalyx below the calyx. Besides flower looks more like Malvastrum.

3 linear epicalyx and distinctive obliquely obovate petals clearly identify with Malvastrum coromanelianum, although leaves are narrower.

Can be Sida acuta also.

Please help me to identify this Malvaceae herb found in dry lakebed. Could this be Sida spinosa?

Date: October 2016

Alt.: 29 m asl

Location: Tiruvallur dist (near Chennai), TN

Thanks, … You can check in EFI also.

Closest I could found as per comparative images at ‎Sida is Sida spinosa L. only.

However, images of leaves in your post look a bit longer compared to images in efi at Sida spinosa L.

I also think it is closer to images at Sida acuta Burm.f. rather than those at Sida spinosa L.

Any reasons or references ?

To me it looks different from images at Sida spinosa L.

It’s very variable based on habitat …,

the main reason is spine-like projections at axils,

if still have doubt wait for experts comments,
