… i think this is Cuscuta chinensis. This is now also found in North India, preferably in Nurseries or near by areas. This plant has 2 styles

I am very sorry for a wrong id of this plant…. post (efi thread) provoked me to re look at my post and I had gone through a thorough literature survey.

Now, I feel that this is Cuscuta campestris Yunck on the ground that …..the corolla lobes broadly triangular, apex acute or obtuse, often reflexed… (key as in Flora of China)

Thanks … to guide me to the key in FOC.

From Flora of China “Capsule entirely enclosed by withered corolla

This was the key feature why I ruled out C. chinensis.

If you see the plant again, please try get pictures of fruits.

On closer look at the close up photographs posted, in reply to … concern, I think your plant is different from what I have uploaded.

I think the one you posted is C. chinensis only. It seems that the withered corolla is completely enclosing the capsule.

Kindly identify the species of Cuscuta growing in Delhi. I suspect there are two species of Cuscuta here, the one with orange-brown thinner stem is flowering and the other with yellow-green thicker stem (C. reflexa?) is not flowering.

Cuscuta chinensis Lam., I think.

I agree with … for identification

Thank you … I am confused; Is it Cuscuta chinensis or C. campestris? How can we differentiate between them?

Yes, Madam, you are correct, it is more likely C. campestris Yuncker, provided it is distributed in your area. However, difference can be found in FoC or FoP KEY. Perhaps host plant described there may help reach further conclusion.

Thank you … In Flora of Delhi ((1963) only two species of Cuscuta are reported to be growing in Delhi, C. reflexa and C. hyaline. I tried FoP but could not conclusively identify the species.

I Haven’t received your mail yesterday, instead replying in the group site directly. This is getting complicated. Please check my thread, I have uploaded a little while ago.

I think your species look similar to mine.

Your species doesn’t look like C. hyalina, for flowers should have acuminate to caudate petals and acute to acuminate sepals. Please check-

plantillustrations

http://www.ispotnature.org/node/535679

Picture of seeds of hyalina can be found at –
Lucid Central

You are right … It does appear to be C. chinensis which probably has not been reported from Delhi

Now I am confused, I have identified my species (at efi thread) as Cuscuta campestris, based on Flora of China KEY –

(i) capsule entirely enclosed by withered corolla = chinensis

(ii) capsule subtended by withered corolla = campestris

Yes, … I am now fully convinced that it is Cuscuta campestris. I dissected the flowers and found them to be exactly as described in Flora of China

Thank you very much Madam. I also tried to dissect those flowers to see scales! But it was impossible to me to see anything inside.

The scales are very much there. They are present where the filaments have fused with the petals (attached photo). Can I also call them coronal outgrowths? if yes, are they then petaloid or staminal in origin? The host in this case is Clerodendrum inerme. After flowering the parasite withers and dies. I am yet to see the other Cuscuta species (probably C.reflexa) with the greenish-yellow stem flower in Delhi.

Like C. reflexa, C. campestris too shows self-parasitism though not as aggressively.

Attachments (1)

Thank you again so much Madam, I also noticed those translucent growth, but couldn’t make out their shapes. Neither could I focus my camera to take a snap.

Yes, I also noticed Clerodendrum is their host, in our case is Clerodendrum infortunatum.

…, there are five delicate translucent scales with inward-facing finger-like projections at their tips (fimbriolate?). Will try to get a better picture.

Yes, Madam, I can very well see the finger like projections in the photograph you have uploaded.

I thank you very much for this excellent learning session.

This is the most common species found along rail-tracks, roadside. It grows on herbaceous weeds. Today I have recorded from three places, chief vegetation found is of Mikania, Alternanthera, and other weeds. Earlier one such species was identified as C. chinensis. One post by Giby Sir, identified as C. campestris looks similar to this species.

I think this species also looks similar to
FoZ or the one in Lucid Central

Sir Prain listed only one species – reflexa, Haines recorded two in Bihar – reflexa and chinensis. But a report informs campestris is present in our state –
