It is my pleasure to present few images of Stereospermum chelonoides (Bignoniaceae)

Habitat: Wild, Dry deciduous forest.

Sighting: Tumkur, Karnataka, about 800 msl

Spathaceous calyx point to Dolichandrone sp. The photo of flowers at the JCB link is of Dolichandrone sp. as well.

Kindly recheck the link … This one is certainly Stereospermum chelonoides, locally known as ‘Uded’….widely used in afforestation of degraded forests. Providing the link again for your reference.

Ref:
http://florakarnataka.ces.iisc.ernet.in/hjcb2/herbsheet.php?id=920&cat=1

I am certain it is Dolichandrone sp. for the spathaceous calyx seen in your photos (2), (4) and (93). Stereospermum suaveolens does not have such a calyx as seen in the FOI photos that you have provided the link for. If you compare the calyx there and in your photos, the difference will be quite apparent.

Dolichandrone sp. is very much a wild one in our area, Tumkur included (Dolichandrone atrovirens being the commonest one). There is an error in the photos on Herbarium JCB in this case. The image in the Stereospermum suaveolens page showing flowers belongs to Dolichandrone sp.

If you compare the other characters they dont match Stereospermum as well, such as the flowers being in
large panicles whereas your photos show a much shorter inflorescence.

Well. Such a confusion…..Error in the files of Herbarium JCB and Forest Dept….!! Thanks for the eye-opener…! All these years this one was said to be Stereospermum chelonoides…!?

Large amounts data will have small errors here and there sir. No harm done at all. Taxonomic characters always help clear confusions!

… Should I take this as Dolichandrone atrovirens in our files…? Kindly throw some light.

To me it is Dolichandrone atrovirens (Roth) K.Schum. sir. But please wait for further validation.

…, I think the link that you have provided resolves all.

Stereospermum flowers are smaller too
