Tall annual or perennial herb up to 180 cm tall, simple or branched, pilose; basal leaves lyrate-pinnatifid with large terminal lobe, very small lateral lobes, petiole winged, upper leaves ovate to lanceolate, entire or dentate; heads yellow ligulate, 1.5-2 cm across, on branched peduncles, nipple-like in bud, hence the name nipplewort, florets 10-18; involucre bracts in two series, outer 4-5, scale-like, hardly 1 mm long; inner 8-10, linear-oblong, slightly unequal, keeled especially in fruit, 6-9 mm long; receptacle smooth; achenes 3-5 mm long, golden-brown, not beaked, without pappus. <\/font>
