Pennsylvania Cudweed, Pennsylvania everlasting;

.

Annual herb, up to 25 cm tall, slightly branched, leaves simple, spathulate, white tomentose especially on lower surface; capitula in short clusters; involucre bracts with white hairs; cypsella, pappus hairs white,

.

As per efi thread :

Leaf surfaces of different colour, upper white hairy, lower almost glabrous; basal leaves persistent at anthesis; inflorescence spicate, lower glomerules of heads often pedunculate …… Gamochaeta purpurea

.

Leaf surfaces not markedly different; basal leaves withered at anthesis; heads in spicate panicles, densely wooly 2/3 from base …….. Gamochaeta pensylvanica

.

It is true that the three species are very close, Gnaphalium purpureum, G. pensylvanica are shifted to genus Gamochaeta on the basis of pappus being connate at the base, whereas in Gnaphalium they are free at base and fall individually.

.

This is what Flora of China writes about Gnaphalium polycaulon

Similar to Gamochaeta pensylvanica, this species differs by its more compact habit, oblanceolate leaves, and free, separately deciduous pappus bristles more dilated at apex.”

.

Herbs, erect, upto 50 cm high; stem, with thin, white cottony tomentum. Leaves spathulate, narrowed at base, broadly rounded and shortly mucronate at apex, entire, 1-7 x 0.1-1 cm, puberulous on upper surface, white pannose on lower surface. Heads in short spicate clusters, ca 2 mm across; peduncle ca 1 mm long. Involucral bracts 3-4-seriate; outermost brown, occasionally pink at apex, oblong-spathulate, obtuse-acute, with white woolly tomentum at base. Ray florets female, with filiform corolla, ca 1 mm long, pink at mouth. Disc florets bisexual, ca 2 mm long, 5-toothed. Achenes oblong, ca 0.5 mm. Pappus hairs white, united at base.

One more question, please, is it native or comes from North America?

North American weed now spread in many parts of the world.

I have heard that Parthenium also came from America.

Location Kalatope, chamba

Altitude 2100 mts

I think Gamochaeta purpurea (= Gnaphalium purpureum).

Tropicos treats Gamochaeta purpurea (L.) Cabrera under the synonymy of Gamochaeta americana (Mill.) Wedd., whereas The Plant List treats them separately.

Your mystery plant is not Gamochaeta purpurea, earlier described under the names Gnaphalium purpureum or G. pennsylvanicum (some times treated distinct Gamochochaeta purpurea and G. pennsylanica as per GRIN or one species Gamochaeta purpurea as per Kew List). That plant grows commonly in Delhi and uploaded by me at FOI. It has leaves which are velvety on both sides, though much more sensely below. FOI

Your plant has leaves which are clearly green on upper surface, a feature of Gnaphalium hypoleucum (still under the same genus)

I think it is close to images at Gamochaeta pensylvanica (Willd.) Cabrera

I also agree with you

Thanks … This seems possible but my pictures are perhaps not sufficient to show all characteristics. From what I can see from my photos, the leaves have no stalks and inflorescence happening predominantly at the top.

This is a Gnaphalium sp. as … have pointed out..!!

Thank you … I am looking at the keys but haven’t reached a positive ID yet. I am hiking up today and will try to see the plant more closely.
