It is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America.[1]

In New Mexico and southern Colorado, it is called plumajillo (Spanish for ‘little feather’) from its leaf shape and texture. In antiquity, yarrow was known as herbal militaris, for its use in staunching the flow of blood from wounds.[2] Other common names for this species include gordaldo, nosebleed plant, old man’s pepper, devil’s nettle, sanguinary, milfoil, soldier’s woundwort, thousand-leaf, and thousand-seal.[3]

Achillea millefolium is an erect herbaceous perennial plant that produces one to several stems 0.2–1 metre (0.66–3.3 ft) in height, and has a spreading rhizomatous growth form. Leaves are evenly distributed along the stem, with the leaves near the middle and bottom of the stem being the largest. The leaves have varying degrees of hairiness (pubescence). The leaves are 5–20 cm long, bipinnate or tripinnate, almost feathery, and arranged spirally on the stems. The leaves are cauline, and more or less clasping.[3]

The inflorescence has four to 9 phyllaries and contains ray and disk flowers which are white to pink. The generally three to eight ray flowers are ovate to round. Disk flowers range from 15 to 40. The inflorescence is produced in a flat-topped cluster. The fruits are small achenes.[3]The plant has a strong, sweet scent, similar to chrysanthemums.[1]

Achillea millefolium please

Can’t resist this anecdote. The species name millefolium literally means a thousand leaves, alludes to the multiply divided leaves. In Greek mythology it is said to have been used by Achilles to heal his warriors during the battle of Troy – hence the name “Achillea”. In Anglo-Saxon times it was used as a charm to ward off evil and illness – and as a treatment for wounds, much as Achilles used it, giving it a common name for the period of ‘Soldier’s Wound-Wort’. Yarrow has been used to stop bleeding by inserting leaves into the nostrils of wounded soldiers.

Garden plant for ID 280411MK3: Please help to identify this plant in a garden at Kotagiri, Nilgiris. Could this be any Apiaceae?

Date/Time- 09-04-2011 / 04:30 PM
Location- Place, Altitude, GP ca. 2000asl; Kotagiri, TN
Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- garden
Plant Habit-herb
Height/Length- 30 – 50 cm long
Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- ca.12 x 4 cm
Inflorescence Type/ Size- terminal umbel; 8-10 cm across
Flowers Size/ Colour/ Calyx/ Bracts- 0.5-0.7 cm across

I also observed little fragrance in this plant.

The leaves and the flower umbelliform remind me of a pink garden cultivar of Yarrow…. Achillea millefolium….
a variety is endemic to Himalayas also… Yarrow is a very important plant in herbal remedies… I have experienced one variety growing in the grass meadow in NY which had leaves if chewed made cough disappear and mouth and tongue go numb for about half hour…

..: do you have closer /better pictures of the leaves… they tend to be lacy ..in laymen’s term…

Scent is in flowers, stems, and leaves….of Yarrow…

Achillea millefolium, the cultivar perhaps ; ‘Summer Pastels’

Pangi is like all mountain valleys.. beautiful.. till the ravages of tourism and unplanned development destroy them… It is actually a very small valley and there are three ways to get into it.. through J&K, via Rohtang pass (Manali) or via Chamba (a dangerous path) there are no real roads in the valley but it is being ‘developed’ .. which means you cannot go anywhere in this valley without eating mouthfuls of dust all along due to massive cutting of hillsides and construction of roads .. soon to be followed with hotels.. 🙁 It could have been akin to the valley of flowers.. if only they’d let it be… huge slopes of mountains.. buried alive under the debris… made me want to cry…

Achillea millefolium from Kashmir, growing commonly in meadows and mountain slopes, photographed from hill above Cheshma shahi on June 26, 2010.

Yes …, Thanks for sharing the fotos.

It is a very common herb growing everywhere in meadows, roadside etc. German name is Schafgarbe mainly because it grows in meadows where sheep graze and the sheep have special liking for it. In south of Germany one finds the flowers of Schafgarbe also in rosa violette color.

All parts of the plant are used in herbal tee. I think it is used in homeopathy too. Perhaps … will give us more information?

According to Homer centaur Chiron (half horse half human hero from the greek mythologie), brought herbal secrets to his human pupils and taught Achilles to use this herb on the battle grounds of Troy.

Achilles is said to have used it to stop the bleeding wounds of his soldiers, hence the name Achillea.

I just wonder, how indian and greek mythologies are parallel, as if they copied the stories from each other just changing the names.

Thanks … for interesting information. Millefolium is one of the most frequently used Homoeo-drugs specially in internal bleeding.
Many years back, I received gift samples of Achillea herbal tea. Without any delay I presented it to the Traditional Healers having expertise in using Indigenous herbal teas. They tried it and gave useful feedback.
I tried it in my Agrohomoeopathic experiments. As you know, Agrohomoeopathy is related to use of Agrohomoeopathy in Agricutlure. I got good results on Kasturi Bhindi (Abelmoschus moschatus) crop but as German remedies are so costly, I stopped further experiments. Now I prefer the Homoeo drugs that can be prepared at farm i.e. from locally available herbs.
