Alocasia odora (also called Night-scented Lily<\/b> or giant upright elephant ear<\/b>) is a flowering plant<\/span><\/a> native to Asia. A. odora<\/i> (called Ray<\/i>) can be used as medicine for the treatment of common cold in North Vietnam<\/span>.[1]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The plant is actually inedible when raw because of needle-shaped <\/span>raphides<\/span><\/a> (calcium oxalate crystals) in the plant cells.[2]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> In Japan, there are several cases of food poisoning by accidental consumption<\/span>. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare<\/span><\/a> warned not to eat A. odora (Kuwazuimo<\/i>), which looks similar to edible Colocasia gigantea<\/span><\/a> (Hasuimo<\/i>) or Colocasia esculenta<\/span><\/a> (Satoimo<\/i>).[3]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/div>\n

The species occurs throughout much of south and southeast Asia, from India north and east to China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula, south through Bangladesh, Myanmar and Viet Nam to Borneo.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The species occurs along the margins of rivers and in swamps in primary and secondary tropical rain forests and bamboo thickets. <\/span><\/div>\n

My impression is that this has somewhat rounded blades more like those of Alocasia odora<\/i>,<\/span> which is best known in subtropical East Asia (southern Japan, Taiwan, China, N. Vietnam). The western limit of A. odora<\/i> is not known, but likely extends west at higher altitudes as the latitude gets lower.
\nIs this plant widespread in Assam, and at what altitudes?<\/p>\n

I would place these as Alocasia odora<\/em>, based on the peltate blades (sinus not reaching the petiole insertion point).
\n<\/span>In <\/span>Alocasia macrorrhizos<\/em>, smaller\/younger leaves can sometimes be peltate, but in mature leaves the sinus reaches the junction, and posterior ribs are often naked (no lamina on sinus side) for one to a few cm.<\/span><\/div>\n
