Flemingia semialata Roxb. ??

Yes

May I have your opinion on this ?

Flemingia semialata W.T.Aiton has got no distribution in Nepal so far.

Considering this as the syn. of Flemingia macrophylla (Willd.)Merr.,

I had suggested Nepali names. Since these are two different sp., please remove Nepali names for this sp from the FoI page.

Flemingia semialata as per POWO is found in Nepal too. Following is a specimen from Nepal:

http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/detailsQuery.do?barcode=K001121984

That is to be explored. The specimen does not give the exact location of Nepal.

Anyway, I have suggested the Nepali names considering Flemingia semialata as syn for Flemingia macrophylla. Actually, these Nepali names are for Flemingia macrophylla.

Flemingia macrophylla as calyx in glandular.

This should be Flemingia semialata. Please note raceme is longer than the leaf petiole (sometimes branched), petiole is winged and seeds are shiny black.

Calyx is gland-dotted in most of the Flemingia sp. and is of little value to distinguish the species.

Only POWO and The Wallich catalogue has got its mention. Even Nepali publications and the link about Flemingia

you have sent earlier also have got no mention for Nepal. So what do you say about this for Nepal

Sending some herbarium images from the Nepal Herbarium for your perusal please.

You are right. I think this species is overlooked by the authors of these publications. While in paper I shared earlier the main focus was on Taxonomic revision of the genus Flemingia

only in India so it’s likely that the authors didn’t consult any Nepalese herbaria and thus specimens.

And yes I agree that most of the above shared specimens are not true F. macrophylla but some other species.

Any suggestion for these specimens?

Earlier we were separating these two species based on the glandular nature of the calyx.

But after through, I find in both species it is glandular.

So we have to separate these species based on this publication which states:

Flemingia macrophylla shows affinities towards F. semialata, F. sootepensis and F. latifolia but differs from them in having racemes shorter than the petiole, grooved petiole and large ovate-lanceolate leaflets.

And keys are:

5. Racemes longer than the petiole; petiole winged ……………. 6

5. Racemes shorter than the petiole; petiole grooved ………… F. macrophylla

6. Pod sparsely gland-dotted ……….. 7

6. Pod densely gland-dotted ………….. F. sootepensis

7. Stipules, bracts and calyx grey tomentose, leaflets narrow-ovate-elliptic ……. F. semialata

I have to review all earlier observations in our site based on these keys.

These are as per Taxonomic revision of the genus Flemingia (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae) in India November 2020 Webbia 75(2):141-218
