Vallisneria spiralis, also known as Straight Vallisneria<\/b>, Tape grass<\/b>, or Eel grass<\/b> is a common <\/span>aquarium<\/span><\/a> plant that prefers good light and a nutrient rich <\/span>substrate<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>In the wild, it can be found in tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It has narrow, <\/span>linear<\/span><\/a> leaves<\/span><\/a> that range in colour from a pale-green to reddish up to 3 feet (1\u00a0m) long and up to 0.75 inches broad. V. spiralis<\/i> is <\/span>monoecious<\/span><\/a> with flowers carried on long spiral stalks that break away from the plant and float on the water’s surface. Seeds have not been observed germinating in aquaria. Instead, it most often propagates by runners which can lead to dense stands.<\/span><\/div>\n
V. spiralis<\/i> is an “unwanted organism” in <\/span>New Zealand<\/span><\/a>.[1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> It is listed on the <\/span>National Pest Plant Accord<\/span><\/a> prohibiting it from sale and commercial propagation and distribution.<\/span><\/div>\n

It is found in estuarine habitats, lakes, rivers, waterlogged swamps with open water, man-made reservoirs, and irrigation channels. It thrives in streams but is seldom present in fast waters.<\/span><\/div>\n

I can see spiral peduncle at the bottom right corner… maybe a Vallisneria<\/i>\u00a0species. Was there more than a single plant?<\/p>\n

This is Vallisneria spiralis<\/i>. Please check author citation.<\/p>\n

Please be carefull about taking photographs of submerged plants. Please note that if the\u00a0tip of the\u00a0basal rosette leaf \u00a0is pointed the species may be\u00a0of Blyxa<\/i>. But here the leaf tip is mre or less rounded. This is\u00a0<\/i>possibly Vallisneria spiralis<\/i>.<\/p>\n
