The Family Rosaceae in India/Revisionary Studies on Potentilla L., Sibbaldia L. & Brachycaulos Dikshit & Panigr.- Vol. 4 by B.K. Dikshit and G. Panigrahi, BSMPS, 1998,

Contents: Preface. Introduction. Materials & methods. Delimitation of the family Rosaceae Juss. Delimitation of the tribes and subtribes. Taxonomic treatment. I. Genus Potentilla L. 1. Origin of the genus. 2. Ancestral relationships of the genus. 3. Generic delimitation within Potentilla L. Sensu lato. 4. Significance of morphological characters. 5. Delimitation of infrageneric categories within Potentilla L. sensu stricto. 6. Systematic account. 7. Discussion. II. Genus Sibbaldia L. III. Genus Brachycaulos Dikshit & Panigrahi. Bibliography. Appendix. Subject index.

“The last great work on the taxonomy of the family Rosaceae Juss, sensu lato in the Indian region, was that of J.D. Hooker (1878). Wolfs (1908) monograph of the genus Potentilla L. comprising then 305 species in the world flora, did not include India, nor did the publications of J. Sojak of Czeckoslovakia, who meticulously studied the genus Potentilla over the last four decades and more. In this context, revisionary studies on as many as 24 of the 37 genera of the family within the political boundaries of India of today, published in four volumes, by G. Panigrahi and his Research Scholars, are of great significance and will of interest to all those interested in the flora of India and of the family Rosaceae in particular (see Robertson, 1991; Kalkman, 1993, 1996; Vaughan, 1993; Schmid 1993, 1997 and Sojak, 1997. Kalkman (1995) commends these studies as “thorough piece (s) of research” and which would “serve as model for regional revisionary” researches, both in India and abroad.

Sibbaldia (Rosaceae) : 1 post by 1 author.

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Sibbaldia (Pl. click).

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the accepted names & synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

Rosaceae Fortnight: Sibbaldia cuneata and S. procumbens in our database : 4 posts by 3 authors.

The small alpine Potentilla described as Potentilla sibbaldii Haller.f. in Flora of British India has gone either as Sibbaldia procumbens var. procumbens (eFlora Pakistan; eFlora China) or S. cuneata Hornem ex Kuntze. The Plant list treats P. sibbaldii described in FBI (synonym of Sibbaldia parviflora Willd.) as distinct from P. sibbaldii of Haller.f. (synonym of S. procumbens)

We thus have three plants to account for, luckily two are described in eFlora of China.

Sibbaldia cuneata: Stems erect or ascending, epicalyx equalling calyx; petals equalling or longer than calyx

Sibbaldia procumbens var. procumbens: Stems prostrate or ascending; epicalyx much shorter than calyx; petals shorter than sepals.

Sibbaldia parviflora: Much like S. procumbens but densely downy and appearing Grey

http://alpinegardensociety.Sibbaldia/parviflora

There are two plants uploaded in our database. One by me as S. procumbens var. procumbens. This should be S. cuneata– efi thread

The second by … uploaded as Sibbaldia cuneata should be S. parviflora- efi thread

… has perhaps correctly identified his plant as S. parviflora– efi thread
