Indian species of Ipomoea : 9 posts by 7 authors.

Taxonomy of Indian species of Convolvulaceae is most incomplete mainly because The Plant List, supposed to include all published names of plants on this earth has huge number of names missing, as evidenced by my numerous communications to them. Same is true for the genus Ipomoea. In an attempt to construct an easy to use key I have first tried to compile a list of species described/reported from Indian subcontinent. As usual I have attempted to include all names under Ipomoea described in Flora of British India and some transferred now to other genera. This would be for easy reference to the original Flora, till an Indian revision of the family is published (or has been published?):

I am sure the list will have many omissions and errors. You are requested to kindly help improve it before it is finalized.

Recent taxonomy of Convolvulaceae largely revolves around pollen grains and dehiscence if fruits, in addition to usual features of corolla shape, styles and stigma. This is how the closely related genera once placed under Ipomoea are segregated:

Merremia: Pollen smooth, porate; capsule opening irregularly or by 4-valves.

Operculina: Pollen smooth, porate; capsule circumscissile.

Ipomoea: Pollen spinose, colpate; fruit dry capsule usually opening by 4 valves; corolla usually glabrous outside; calyx slightly enlarged in fruit.

Stictocardia: Pollen spinose, colpate; fruit dry capsule splitting irregularly; calyx greatly enlarged enclosing the fruit.

Rivea: Pollen spinose, colpate; fruit indehiscent; corolla pubescent outside; corolla salverform; stamens attached near middle of the tube; fruits dry.

Argyreia: Pollen spinose, colpate; fruit indehiscent; corolla pubescent outside; corolla funnel-shaped; stamens attached below middle of the tube; fruits usually fleshy or leathery.

Perhaps more as we finalize our list.

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Operculina

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far as possible.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.
