Range extension of two poorly known endemic species of the genus Orophea Blume (Annonaceae) –

    K. Sankararao, N.V. Page, A.N. Sringeswara, R. Arun Singh, Imran Baig & Sahana Vishwanath- Journal of Threatened Taxa 7(3): 6996–6999 (2015)-

Abstract: Orophea malabarica Sasidh. & Sivar. and Orophea sivarajanii Sasidh., of the family Annonaceae were found growing in close proximity as undergrowth with restricted distribution in the evergreen forest of Makutta Ghat, Kodagu District, Karnataka State, India. Earlier reports suggest that these are endemic to Kerala state of the Western Ghats and found distributed only in their type localities viz., Thrissur and Wayanad districts respectively. However, the present article reports extension of their range to new locations in Karnataka state and therefore become addition to the floral wealth of the state, as they were neither previously collected nor recorded from this region. The updated nomenclature, detailed description, flowering-fruiting seasons, distribution map, scanned herbarium specimens, field photographs, proposed conservation status and other relevant notes are provided in this communication.

Abstract– Orophea narasimhanii (Annonaceae), a new species collected from the inland evergreen forests of Rutland Island, south Andaman, is described and illustrated. This species is allied to Orophea monosperma (Kurz) Craib, but differs from it by larger petals, a larger number of stamens and acute anther connective. A detailed description and illustration is provided. [Not mentioned in A conspectus of Indo-Burmese Annonaceae by I. M. Turner (2015)]

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Orophea

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far as possible.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see all the details.

    Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

If you find any mis-identification, pl. let us know.

If anybody can send images of other species of this genera (for incorporation in the website), it will be really nice. Also, if anybody is interested to take up the activity of inserting images on efloraofindia pages from efloraofindia posts, pl. let us know.
