Cleome chelidonii (Ratnagiri Dist):

Here I’m sending some Photographs of

Botanical Name – Cleome chelidonii L.f.

Common Name – Celandine Spider Flower

Vernacular Name- Pan tilvan

Family – Capparaceae

Date – August 2012

Location – Rajapur, Ratnagiri, MH.

Yes ID is Correct, & its Identified by me.

I got this plant near pond region, in Konkan.

… wet feet question compelled me to look down at the leaves in the distant shots, they appear linear and no where near Cleome, although flower is very much like a cleome.

It would be nice if … uploads a photograph with leaves to allay our doubts.

Very beautiful photographs with habitat. Fruits and flowers confirm to be Cleome sp.

Thanks a lot – … For …, here i’m sending another some pics of d same plant.

For d identification I have refered FLORA OF MAHARASHTRA STATE – Dicotyledones VOL-1

I’m also sending scan copy of Flora which mentioned Cleome chelidonii L.f.

Kindly Please check n tell me, weather I’m right or wrong.

There is so much to know about Indian flora… yes I give you that flower is reminiscent …

and the seed pod … but such round seed pods develop in several plants I know of.. mustard is one that comes to mind…

the pic SDC10265-001.JPG shows that some animal is fond of grazing on it…

besides showing NOT A SINGLE CLEOME like leaf… at least to my eye.. I ‘ll await … email

BIG Thanks to … for raising the issue. It is Cleome simplicifolia

http://tariquesani.net/displayimage.php?pos=-2283

Here is another example of why it is important to upload photographs of leaves. Without the first photograph showing habitat, this plant would have easily gone into our records as Cleome chelidonii, a much similar looking in flowers except that here they are more lilac in shade than being purple. The simple linear leaves are highly distinctive of C. simplicifolia.

I also ignored the leaves being a distant shot, but thanks … for detecting ‘wet feet’ which forced me to look at leaves below on the plant.

In my concern…I have too observed simple leaves in Cleome chelidonii, in addition it only occurs in aquatic places or in marshy land; while C. simplicifolia is comparatively small, prostrate one with ovate leaves, fairy occurs in mainland….

Please see the attachment below for C. simplicifolia.

So the correct ID for … posted pics is C. chelidonii only….at least as per

This attached pic, is produced from the PHD thesis of Dr. V. T. Apradh (he is one of good frnd of mine) department of Botany, Shivaji University, Kolhapur. He has done PHD in Cleome. In addition, I have taken the picture of habit. SEM image was produced from the thesis too. He is very kind person so he made his thesis available online in the form of blog. I don’t think it would be problematic or something.

I think this can not be Cleome simplicifolia as the flowers appear to be larger. They are only 4-5mm in Cleome simplicifolia which is a very small herb. I think this is a bigger erect herb Cleome chelidonii which is 30-60 cm tall. Probably she has missed to catch the rosette of basal leaves so they are not visible. What we see here are the upper linear lanceolate leaves.

Thanks … for correcting me fast

Let me put it this way. “”This is another example of why photographs without proper leaves can be confusing………..and where an internet upload (for me) can be more confusing”.

Yes it can’t be C. simplicifolia in which stamens are 10-12 in number. Yes the number of stamens do suggest C. chelidoni, but leaves are still a problem. I can’t see a single palmate leaf in all plants seen, and description in FBI does not mention about simple leaves in C. chelidoni.

Perhaps a photograph showing lower palmate leaves and simple linear cauline leaves clinches the issue.

I would like to mention once again n all u can see d Habitat picture SDC10270.JPG & DSCN0448.JPG in which clearly seen the plant was grown on aquatic place in Konkan, After catching some snaps heavy rain was started there, thats why I was not able to catch the rosette of basal leaves, but as per my field observations I concluded it C.chelidonii only, apart from rossete leaves stamens are also suugested dat its only C.chelidonii & … too agrred it – ” Yes it can’t be C. simplicifolia in which stamens are 10-12 in number. Yes the number of stamens do suggest C. chelidoni “

I would say many thanks to … who uploded Morphological snap of C. simplicifolia.

It was a learning experience. For most plants II consult FBI which is fairly reliable, but does not mention simple leaves. I think I will also now buy Flora of Maharashtra.

Herb (Weak diffuse stem)

Leaf-Whorled (You can notice in one of the attached photo that whorled leaf modified into bract), Racemose (Corymb) or solitary axilary? Bi-sexual, Polyandrous, Syncarpous, Hypogynous, polypetalous, actinomorphic calyx.

Fruit- Dry dehiscent (Pod),

Is it Inflorescence?? or stem because the whorled leaf as on the main axis of inflorescence goes on modifying to bract like structure. Experts have to confirm.

Growing on the lateritic plateau near Devgad, coastal Kokan, MH in Aug 2021.

This was a showstopper for me this season. These flowers looked so pretty dancing in the breeze. The sight of these flowers was breath taking.

On efi, I do not see a separate page for this plant. They are included in the page for Cleome chelidonii, which I think is a separate plant. I did not see any palmate leaves here.

Looking at the comparative images of the flowers at: https://uk.inaturalist.org/taxa/907696-Corynandra-elegans, the ID seems to be correct.
