IDENTIFICATION OF WILD FLOWER:

Could your group of experts please help identify and describe this wild flower i photographed in the foothills of chandigarh. These flowers were found growing on the banks of a wheat field..

I am writing about these flowers in the newspaper and would require your expertise.

… it is I suppose Dicliptera bupleuroides Nees

efi thread

In Peristrophe paniculate (now correctly known as Dicliptera paniculata) the inflorescence is much longer and broader on long stalks and petals much narrower.

efi thread 1

efi thread 2

efi thread 3

Since the inflorescence of this plant is axillary clusters and not panicles, this may not be P. paniculata.

Yes I agree with … and … as this plant is Dicliptera bupleuroides of Acanthaceae family

eFlora

Perhaps a caution is needed in light of diverse treatment in eFlora of Pakistan and eFlora of China.

Flora of British India recognises two taxa: D. roxburghiana Nees growing in plains on N. India from Punjab to Assam (it has elliptic acute leaves; bracts elliptic or obovate, apiculate not acuminate (less than twice as long as broad-eFl China) and D. roxburghiana var. bupleuroides growing in hills from 1000-6000 ft. (which is now treated as distinct species D. bupleuroides; leaves ovate or elliptic acute or acuminate; bracts linear or linear-oblong nearly parallel sided and acuminate-cuspidate at tip)

Pakistan Flora does not list D. roxburghiana and treats D. roxburgiana auct (non Nees); T. Anders as synonym of D. bupleuroides, in which flowers are supposed to be 12-15 mm long, lists flowers shorter than 5 mm in D. verticillata which also has linear-lanceolate bracts.

Flora of China luckily includes both the species D. bupleuroides (corolla 5 mm long) and D. chinensis (L.) Juss. (with D. roxburghiana Nees as synonym). Both are reported to be growing in India, D. bupleuroides according to Useful Plants of India, CSIR known as Bouna in Simla and D. Roxburhiana as Kirch or Somni in Punjab.

Luckily … not following the posting guidelines has been blessing in disguise, because after downloading I could enlarge the photograph and focus on bracteoles, they are clearly broader and nearly rounded at apex nearly obovate with apiculate apex, suggesting that species could be D. chinensis, that matches with distribution in FBI.

I am attaching the cropped photograph

On further examination and discussions at thread: Dicliptera bupleuroides Nees (accepted name) ??? , I feel it should be Dicliptera riparia Nees (syn: Dicliptera roxburghiana var. riparia (Nees) Benoist) as per distribution, specimens and references herein.

I have been lazy in identifying this correctly in the past. New photos and a careful look suggests Roxburgh’s Foldwing. Please advise.

As per efi thread;

(i) bracts obovate or cuneate, elliptic, apiculate, not acuminate = D. roxburghiana Nees (D. chinensis)

(ii) bracts linear or linear-oblong, with nearly parallel margins, acuminate-cuspidate = var. bupleuroides (D. bupleuroides)

The key above is from “Bengal Plants”

Should it be
Dicliptera chinensis (L.) Juss. (syn: Dicliptera roxburghiana Nees) as per the above keys ?

Thank you … for correcting me. The bracts in my sample are indeed obovate and end abruptly in points rather then tapering into them. It is very likely D. chinensis.

There seems to be a lot of variation combined with confusion in some books and databases. While on trip to Kashmir last year I did find two distinct populations, that after seeing the two plants shown by … appear two distinct species.

The species is differentiated according to Flora of China by leaf ovate, apex acuminate; cymes subsessile or on 3-5 mm long peduncle, many flowered; bracts lanceolate, 2-3 mm; outer bracteoles green, oblong-lanceolate, 5-7 × ca. 2 mm, abaxially pubescent, base cuneate, apex mucronate; inner bracteoles green with yellowish margin, lanceolate, ca. 4 × 1.5 mm; calyx ca. 3 mm; corolla ca. 5 mm, outside pubescent; lip in lower position orbicular, ca. 1.5 × 1.5 mm; lip in upper position oblong, ca. 2 × 1 mm, Staminal filaments ca. 2 mm; style ca. 3 mm. Capsule ca. 3 mm, seeds1 mm

I have been on a lookout for this species for a long time, but none of the findings agreed with the description. This plant of yours agrees very well with the description of Dicliptera bupleuroides. Particularly striking for me is the 3-toothed upper lip, and a round lower lip, and the flowers being velvety on the outer side. To put any remaining doubt to rest, I would probably be happy to see a mature leaf, to see if it is long-pointed.

All three similar species are listed in FBI (under names D. riparia, D. roxburghiana and D. roxburghiana var. bupleuroides): Here is comparison of accepted names

D. riparia Nees is distributed in Pegu and Tenassarim (Myanmar),FBI according to Flora China Nepal, Myanmar to Yunan: Lesves ovate, obtuse often emarginate bracts, bracteoles 6 mm, linear.

D. chinensis (L.) Juss. (Syn: D. roxburghiana Nees): Leaves ovate-elliptic, base cuneate to attenuate, decurrent on petiole, outer bracteoles 5-13 mm x 3-8 mm , less than twice as long as broad, corolla 10-12 mm long; Throughout India

D. bupleuroides Nees (Syn: D. roxburghiana var. bupleuroides (Nees) Clarke): leaves ovate, base cuneate; outer bracteoles 5-7 mm long, more than twice as long as broad; corolla 5 mm long.; Throughout India

When looking for specimens from Western Himalayas we have to be vigilant about size of corolla and relative length breadth ratio of outer bracteoles.

This is clearly D. bupleuroides, observe smaller corolla and shape of corolla lobes.

Wild flower-1 : Attachments (1). 9 posts by 6 authors.

just returned from a lovely trip to the north Bengal hills and forests. Five of us (…) visited Buxa Tiger Reserve-Chilapata Forests and Jaldapara WLS, and seen lots of wildlife, wild plants and birds.

Enjoyed bathing in Jainty river and hill streams at Buxa, the elephant ride thru dense forest at Jaldapara was exciting, the butterflies of the hills were awesome…. and the rhinos of forests simply amazing… the hills were clothed with wild flora…. got spectacular views of the buxa hills on moonlit Purnima nights….

sharing images of wild flowers taken in the Buxa hills near Tashigaon (2000 feet).

plz help with the IDs.

This looks like some species of Dicliptera.

Thanks for identifying the genus of this flower….

can u tell me whats the species?

Have been to Buxa Tiger Reserve & Jaldapara WLS but am not familiar with the local flora there. To get to the species level you will have to consult the local field guides.

Yes, this is Dicliptera, most probably D. cuneata.

Dicliptera for sure

However, India Biodiversity Portal gives its range as Peninsular India only

Dicliptera chinensis in FOI : 13 posts by 2 authors.

Images of Dicliptera chinensis in FOI appears close to Dicliptera riparia Nees (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana var. riparia (Nees) Benoist) as mentioned in the Checklist of Nepal as per GBIF specimens.

Catalogue of Life gives its distribution as India (Himalayas, Plains of E-, N- & NE-India, Upper Gangetic Plains), Myanmar [Burma] (Bago, Taninthayi), Thailand, Nepal.

For Dicliptera chinensis (L.) Juss. (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana Nees), Catalogue of life (China (Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Hongkong, Macao, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan), Taiwan, Indochina, Pakistan (Baluchistan, Quetta, Waziristan, Kurram, N.W.Frontier Prov., Dir, Swat, Pakistani Punjab, Salt Range, Rawalpindi, Hazara), Ryukyu Isl., Hawaii (I) (Kauai (I), Oahu (I), Molokai (I))) does not mention its distribution in India. POWO (Afghanistan, Assam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China South-Central, China Southeast, Hainan, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nansei-shoto, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam) also does not give its distribution in the Himalayas.

So I think our Himalyan plants should be Dicliptera riparia Nees (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana var. riparia (Nees) Benoist)

According to POWO, Dicliptera riparia is found from Nepal eastwards to China. Flowers at FOI were found in Nainital. So, it is highly unlikely they belong to Dicliptera riparia.

For Dicliptera chinensis (L.) Juss. (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana Nees), POWO does not give its distribution in the Himalayas.

So it is highly that it is Dicliptera riparia Nees (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana var. riparia (Nees) Benoist) as per Catalogue of Life (Himalayas, Plains of E-, N- & NE-India, Upper Gangetic Plains), Myanmar [Burma] (Bago, Taninthayi), Thailand, Nepal.

Also our observations match with
GBIF specimens and are the same as those from Nepal.

There are no other closer species found in the Himalayas.

Also references in POWO seem quite old.

Karthikeyan et al. (2009), I think did the revision/ checklist in 2009 as per detail at Dicliptera: FLOWERING PLANTS OF INDIA, DICOTYLEDONS, Vol-I (Acanthaceae-Avicenniaceae) authored by S.Karthikeyan, M.Sanjappa and S.Moorthy and published by Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata in 2009

POWO does not give its distribution in the Himalayas. ”

That may be just because it is found only in the Himalayan foothills, and not the Himalayas. According to Flora of Morni Hills, it is found in Morni hills. However, Dicliptera chinensis is supposed to have a very wide distribution, from E. Afghanistan to SE Asia.

Well, I don’t know about others, but Balkrishna, A. (2018). Flora of Morni Hills (Research & Possibilities): 1-581.is reasonably new.

My feeling is that for some taxon it has given some references and for others it has not. It is also not based on WCSP, as it is not available over there. The Plant List is based on WCSP (under review). It does not show any reference of Karthikeyan et al. (2009), which is the main work on this genus in India.

POWO shows distribution of species on Maps, which can be very misleading for India.

Just to give an example, Dicliptera nasikensis is distributed in Nasik district of Maharashtra only as per
Catalogue of Life and Flora of Peninsular India.

However, if you see it in POWO, its map will show as if it is distributed all over India except for Assam and Himalayas. On clicking Full Distribution Listing under it, it says Native to India.

As per my experience with it, it has divided India into four regions- India, Assam, West Himalaya and East Himalaya.

So it is found in Nasik or Maharashtra only, it will show the area as shown at POWO and similarly for other three regions.

So beware- don’t think it is distributed all over India and be careful.

Pl. see Dicliptera riparia

Well, now Dicliptera chinensis, with a wide distribution, is completely missing from eFI. More thinking and research may be required in this.

All of our observations are from the Himalayas, where Dicliptera riparia Nees (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana var. riparia (Nees) Benoist) is found and not Dicliptera chinensis (L.) Juss. (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana Nees).

Nobody has posted anything similar to Dicliptera chinensis (L.) Juss. (syn. Dicliptera roxburghiana Nees) from other areas.

Even the page of Dicliptera roxburghiana in Flora of Peninsular India is blank.

Neither Flora of Pakistan nor Checklist of Nepal mentions it.

I could not find many regional references where it is mentioned at Dicliptera

Catalogue of Life also does not give its distribution in India (China (Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Hongkong, Macao, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan), Taiwan, Indochina, Pakistan (Baluchistan, Quetta, Waziristan, Kurram, N.W.Frontier Prov., Dir, Swat, Pakistani Punjab, Salt Range, Rawalpindi, Hazara), Ryukyu Isl., Hawaii (I) (Kauai (I), Oahu (I), Molokai (I))

So it may be rare in India or some other variety other than type variety of Dicliptera roxburghiana Nees may be reported.

This is D.chinensis only as per details at Dicliptera roxburghiana and Dicliptera roxburghiana var. bupleuroides
