Perennial, forming clumps from a \u00b1 bulbous base<\/span>; culms 5-80 cm high, geniculately ascending. Leaf-blades 2-20 cm long, 2-7 mm wide. Panicle 2-12 cm long; involucres cup-shaped, 3-7 mm long; inner spines short, flattened, connate for a quarter to half their length to form a cup, glabrous or obscurely puberulous and grooved on the face, occasionally sparsely ciliate on the margins, green to dark purple, antrorsely scaberulous, narrowly triangular at the tip; outer spines few, short, often suppressed, rarely almost as long as the inner. Spikelets 1-3 per burr, 3-5 mm long.<\/span>

Description: <\/b><\/span>Perennial herbs. Culms bulbous at base, geniculately ascending, 20\u201380 cm tall. Leaf sheaths keeled, scabrous; leaf blades linear, 2\u201320 \u00d7 0.4\u20130.8 cm, adaxial surface pilose with long scattered hairs. Panicle stiff, 4\u201312 \u00d7 0.6\u20130.7 cm, burrs overlapping by about half their length, rachis scabro-puberulous. Burrs broadly oblong with rounded base, 0.3\u20130.7 cm, subsessile; inner spines short, flattened, connate for 1\/4\u20131\/2 their length forming a tough cup, flattened free tips narrowly triangular, erect, grooved on inner\u00a0 the face, shortly ciliate; outer spines\u00a0 few, very short, often suppressed, reduced to bristles around periphery of cupule. Spikelets 1-3 in burr, 3.5\u20135 mm long.
