Acalypha ¿ indica ? … (family: Euphorbiaceae)
Dear friends, hopefully this plant is A. indica. Please validate.
Are any other species of Acalypha, say A. lanceolata confusingly close to A. indica ?
… this plant was found in the parking lot of ropeway station at Bhedaghat. The ropeway offers splendid viewing of roaring waterfalls, gorging the marble rocks – as it plunges into river Narmada. The large column of misty spray looks like cascading smoke rather than waterfall, thus lending the name Dhuandhar Falls (धूआंधार). Here are two pictures showing the views …

Your photographs are excellent. The views of the water fall are fantastic and breath-taking.

I think the plant seen in your photograph is Acalypha ciliata Forssk. (Gujarati names: Dadra, Runchalo-dadri; Punjabi name: Kokali, Kuppi). The local names are not dependable as the same name is often used for several species of the genus.
The reason why I came to this species is because the female bracts in this species is leafy, folded, campanulate with fringed or fimbriate as several long finger-like lobes at the rim. Whereas in A. indica L. the female bracts are cup-shaped, denticulate into teeth along margins (not fringed or fimbriate as in A. ciliata).
However, a final confirmation can be made only by studying the morphology of flowers in detail. Please refer to the genus Acalypha in Flora of India, vol. 23: pages 90 – 105. 2012.

Thank you very very much … for validating the ID. Thank you very much for elaborating the differences among the species. I would go ahead to label this photos in my flickr photostream with tentative ID as Acalypha ciliata Forssk.

Acalypha ¿ ciliata Forssk. ?
Tentative ID of Acalypha ciliata Forssk. suggested by … in my post Acalypha ¿ indica ? at Bhedaghat … dated 30 SEP 13. The two photos put below may not sufficiently show the aspects to nail the ID. Uploading this in wake of the Euphorbiaceae Fortnight.

in Bhedaghat on 17 SEP 13

Yes.  What is the confusion about Acalypha ciliata.

In earlier post of mine, … suggested A. ciliata with the note … a final confirmation can be made only by studying the morphology of flowers in detail.
Would a cropped version of photo – showing the flowers little closer be of any help to confirm it as A. ciliata ?

I think it is a correct identification.

EUPHORBIACEAE FORTNIGHT :: Acalypha ciliata?? :: Pune SMP 2 : 1 image. 6 posts by 4 authors. I know I am repeating the plants posted earlier during the fortnight but this is just to build our database and for the knowledge of members about the distribution of these species in different areas. The bracts/sepals of this species look different than those of Acalypha indica. in having hairy tips. I can not to come to conclusion of its ID. Can it be Acalypha ciliata or Acalypha malabarica??

It could be either A. ciliata or A. malabarica. In A.ciliata the female bracts have fimbriately lobed or fringed margins and do not have gland-tipped hairs. In A. malabarica the female bracts are not lobed, but have gland-tipped hairs along the rim. Please check them in live plants.

Could you please post a close up of female bracts ?

This is from my old collection. Even I don’t remember where did I observe it.

Yes, this is Acalypha ciliata Forssk., a common weed throughout India.

The distinctive feature of this species is that the bracts of female flowers are folded, campanulate, fringed or fimbriate along margins.

In A. malabarica, the female bracts are not fimbriate but has hispid gland-tipped hairs along the rim.

Acalypha lanceolata  Willd.

Dear friends, please help in validating this Acalypha to be A. lanceolata … …, your thoughts please, if these only photos help.

This appears to be Acalypha ciliata Forssk. However you may compare with the description of the species given in Flora of India, vol. 23: page 94, for confirmation.

Thanks a lot … Will try to check Flora of India.
