Anogeissus latifolia ( Combretaceae ) – Flora Of Madhya Pradesh:
Photographed this Anogeissus latifolia or Dhawra Tree in d jungle of Chikhral, Betul, MP.
It was a large tree of about 35 mts height with greyish-white bark. I thought fruits must have been der but couldnt locate any, due to tree height.
Dhawra tree is a source of edible gum.

In and around Bombay it is called Dhavda. It is a fire-resistant tree. Sending a few of my photographs of the fruit..

In treatment of Diabetes Type II rather Diabetes Complications the Traditional Healers prepare hundreds of types of Laddus. In these Laddus Diabetes Herbs are added and tree gum is added as binding agent. The Tree gums play vital role in treatment. Dhawda is one of these gums. It is bit constipating but by adding other ingredients this drawback can be removed.

Please help ID this tree growing in Chandigarh.
Height nearly 30 feet.

I hope Ziziphus mauritiana

I hope this is Holoptelia integrifolia

From the smooth bark and the leaves, it looks like Dhavda [Anogeissus latifolia] to me.

Thanks for the quick response.
…, Leaves do look like Anogeissus latifolia.
Posting another picture, might be of some help.

Affirmative. This is Dhavda [Anogeissus latifolia]. Have this on my property at Shahapur. Will send close-ups of the leaves later. Some of my photographs of this are available at this link

My photographs. Will send photographs of the leaves of Vavla [Holoptelia integrifolia] for comparison in a separate mail.

Thanks … for correcting me

Though … may be correct we have to wait for clear characters. The leaves are not subopposite here as in Anogeissus but rather alternate as in Holoptela though I am not sure about that too. Bark is in favour of the former though. Leaves of Holoptela would be bigger. We do not have size here.

According to Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, Yadav & Sardesai’s ‘Flora of Kholapur District’ and also Cooke’s ‘Flora of Bombay Presidency’ the leaves of Anogeissus latifolia are alternate or sub-opposite.
