BIXA ORELLANA:
Attaching two images of Bixa orellana. This plant is known as Arnotto or Antto dye tree. I saw is plant for the first time in Indian Institute of science campus in Bangalore. That campus is very rich in floral diversity. Next time i saw this plant at Tezpur ( Assam ).T his is what Dr Venkatesh say about this plant.
“Arnotto tree has long been under cultivation in India and is sometimes found naturalized in this country. It is a small size tree. The flowers are showy. It’s fruit capsules are reddish brown in colour and are covered with prickles. From coloured seed coats is obtained a yellow dye which is good for colouring cheese and butter.

This species is very common in Bangalore and Mysore. On the right side of the entrance gate to Mysore Palace (near main road), a row of these plants can be seen.

I photographed this small tree in Santiniketan (Bolpur, Birbhum) in December, 2009.
A google search with the string ‘red echinus fruit / red spiny fruit’ gave me this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bixa_orellana) wikipedia link that i think is the ID of this plant.

Bixa seed pods opened to show innards:
These Bixa seed pods seed pods are quite dry in … thread , the innards may look something like in my attached first picture. Compare that to the fresh ones… last two… I have seen even more fresh ones that are more pulpy and slimy pulp around the seeds when ( I guess) a little younger…

Thanks in turn… I do agree that it has escaped in certain areas. I have come across specimen growing at places where it could not have been planted.

The ID is correct. It is a very useful plant. Fruits are used in preparation of edible colouring matter for colouring food and also Sindhur. commonly known as Arnatto and Lipstick tree.
