FLOWERING PLANTS OF INDIA, DICOTYLEDONS, Vol-I (Acanthaceae-Avicenniaceae) authored by S. Karthikeyan, M. Sanjappa and S. Moorthy and published by BSI, Kolkata in 2009 is an important document for names, authority and distribution of Asclepiadaceae species in India.

As per this document (Karthikeyan et al., 2009) following species of Caralluma occur in India:

1- Caralluma adscendens (Roxb.) Haw. [var. adscensdens; var. attenuata;
var. carinata;
var. fimbriata;
var. geniculata;
var. gracilis]
2- C. bhupinderana Sarkaria
3- C. campanulata (Wight) N.E. Br. (synonym of C. umbellata Haw.)
4- C. edulis (Edgew.) Benth. ex Hook.f.
5- C. lasiantha (Wight) N.E. Br. (synonym of C. umbellata Haw.)
6- C. nilagiriana Kumari & Subba Rao
7- C. procumbens Gravely & Mayur.
8- C. sarkariae Lavranos & R.M.I. Frandsen
9- C. staintonii H. Hara
10- C. stalagmifera E.C.E.Fisch. [ var. stalagmifera; var. intermedia; var. longipetala]
11- C. truncato-coronata (Sedgw.) Gravely & Mayur.

Scrutiny of these names in Plant List indicates that C. campanulata and C. lasiantha are synonyms
Caralluma bicolor Ramach., S. Joseph, H.A. John & C. Sofiya is a newly described species and not mentioned in Karthikeyan et al. 2009.

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Caralluma

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the accepted names & synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

I have added the list of all Indian species of Caralluma (Asclepiadaceae; in eFI- Apocynaceae) based on Karthikeyan et al. 2009

.

Caralluma indica seems to be a surprise miss in this. Any reasons ?

Yes it is not mentioned in the list because Karthikeyan et al. (2009) considered it as Desmidorchis indica (Wight & Arn.) Kuntze, a different genus in Asclepiadaceae.

However, updated Plant List consider Desmidorchis indica as synonym of Caralluma indica (Wight & Arn.) N.E. Br. Accordingly it should be added in the list of species of Caralluma in eFI.

Pl. go through Caralluma page (‎‎‎Apocynaceae) with images of species in efloraofindia (done by me & …).

If you find any mis-identification, pl. let us know.

If anybody can send images of other species of this genera (for incorporation in the website), it will be really nice. Also, if anybody is interested to take up the activity of inserting images on efloraofindia pages from efloraofindia posts, pl. let us know.
