09-04-11-PR -1 For ID-Chennai:
I saw this creeper with pink berries growing in Chennai today.
Please help me id it.

Any Vitaceae member (Vitis sps.).

Cayratia or Tetrastigma species.

This is Cayratia pedata. In Tamil Nadu, it is very commonly distributed in the dry forests especially nearer to streamlets

Leaves pedately 7-foliate;
Fruit, a berry, sub-globose,
cream colored (not pink in my view).
Unable to comment on pubescence.
Feel this could be Cayratia pedata.

Yes. I agree with the identification of … I donot know I how  missed this plant in Chennai. A new plant to me.

Cayratia pedata Gagnep. ??? (Hooghly):

The book, “Plant Groups” mentions a few Vitaceae members and one of them is Vitis pedata Vahl. = Cayratia pedata Gagnep.
Recorded some photographs of a wild climber and searched the net for its ID. Was trying to obtain info for Cayratia pedata Gagnep. What i found –

As i said before in one of my earlier posts that I met Dr. … on the last Tuesday, … Sir gifted me copies of his book, “Excursion Flora of Simhachalam Hill”. This books offers an account of Cayratia pedata (Vahl.) Gagnep. Hc. I copy the following words from the book –
“Syn. Vitis pedata Vahl. A tomentose vine; Leaves 7-foliate, Flowers 4-merous, white, June-August….”
A herbarium of the same plant is available at – http://www.rprcbbsr.com/herbarium/herbarium/images/id/115

…, I have my reservations on this id. I am unable to give you an alternate id either.
Please keep this id open to review …

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Cayratia_pedata_DSCN9694.jpg/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Cayratia_pedata_DSCN9691.jpg/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Cayratia_pedata_DSCN9692.jpg/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Cayratia_pedata_DSCN9690.jpg

Yes Sir, the ID should be kept open for more discussion, not only this one, I think all…..
However, ‘Bengal Plants’ and ‘Botany of Bihar & Orissa’ describe only one Vitis with 5 to 7 foliolate leaves – Vitis pedata Vahl.
I have seen even 9 leaflets, the outer most leaflets sometimes being divided upto the petiolule. I have seen flowers of both 4 & 5 merous.
Attached here some photographs for your perusal.

My reservation was based on the plant looking glabrous (C. pedata is hairy), irrespective of the number of leaflets. … has given reason for that (rain drenched) in a direct post to me.

Please help with the name of Cayratia pedatagoalilata or goalia-lata in Bangla script.
Reference: Botanical Survey of India | Flora of Assam Vol. I. (Part II)

I am giving below the bengali script.  In Bengali, Lata means climber.  In the first word, i. e. Goalilata, I feel that Goali should be separated from Lata as given herewith.
Whether all volumes of Flora of Assam are available online?
গোয়ালি লতা, গোয়ালিয়া-লতা

Thanks once again very much … for the help.

About Flora of Assam, I found following links (not sure whether these comprise all the volumes):
While লতা = creeper, vine … I am wondering what is literal meaning of গোয়ালি or গোয়ালিয়া.
Ampelocissus latifolia also is given the name gowalia lata at some references.
Perhaps another name govila may help in getting some clue.

I express my sincere thanks for providing the valuable links leading to the Flora of Assam which is not available in BHL and Botanicus. I have downloaded all. At first I thought that someone has published a revised Flora of Assam! Anyway, I do not have to go to a library now for seeing this basic book. Prof. S. K. Borthakur of Guwahati University and his students are likely to publish the same in near future.

As regards Lata in Bengali, the meaning that you have given is okay. But there is absolutely no meaning of Goali, Gowalia or Govali. There is Goala meaning milk man and Goal meaning cow shed but the others do not make any sense.  At least I do not know it.

I find the name is used by the Bhumij tribe as put in a white paper.
I find গোয়ালিয়া লতা in a couple of web pages:
Both the pages discuss plants; thus good to go with the name.

Yes it is Cayratia

Thanks for the genus level validation. I understand from Frlht ‘s vernacular names that Cayratia sp are called Kattu Pirandai in Tamil.
The local name in Alagarkoil seems to be Kali Pirandai. Tamil speaking friends, please confirm whether Kali pirandai is an accepted name.

This is Cayratia pedata, also called as ‘panni kodi’ in Tamil, since the wild pigs (wild boars) are fond of the tuberous roots of this plant.

I think it may be Cayratia tenuifolia (Wight & Arn.) Gagnep. or C. japonica (most likely) being 5 pedately foliolate as per Keys in Flora of Peninsular India

It looks Tetrastigma leucostaphylum to me.

Looks different from Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb.
I think more closer to Tetrastigma sulcatum (P. Lawson) Gamble as per comparative images at Tetrastigma

Seems to be Cayratia japonica

I think it is Cayratia pedata only (as originally identified by Vijayasankar ji) as per images and details herein.
It looks different from Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb. as well as from Tetrastigma sulcatum (P. Lawson) Gamble
It also looks different from Cayratia japonica as per GBIF.

Parthenocissus semicordata (Wall.) Planch. ???

Need to cross verify!

Leaves are pedately compound and different from Parthenocissus semicordata

Keys from Flora of Bhutan lead me to Cayratia or Tetrastigma
I could not find a match as per comparative images at Tetrastigma

Cayratia mollissima (Wall.) Gagnep. ??

No, … I think it should be Cayratia pedata as per keys and comparative images at Cayratia, as I can see 6- 9 pedately foliolate leaves.

OK …!

Cayratia japonica was recorded in Mizoram

Thanks, … It is not C.japonica.

Ok, thanks.

…, I too agree with you for Cayratia pedata,
